AUGUSTA, Ga.---A morning shooting sent one man to the hospital and another to jail. It happened around 9:30 this morning at the Community Grocery Store on 13th Avenue.

39-year-old Juan Tanksley was shot twice: once in the back and once in the leg. His family says he had just arrived to work at the Community Grocery when he was shot. Now they want the guns off the streets.

"He's not the type of person to bring no violent problems," said Latoyce Harris, Tanksley's niece. "He's not a violent man."

Family members say Tanksley was shot while trying to make peace. He had just pulled up in his truck to work at the Community Grocery when he was met by 27-year-old William Sevallis Davis.

"(Tanksley) was just getting to work," Harris said. "He was just getting out of his truck, and he let the guy know, 'Man, who you looking for is not around here.' He said, 'So go ahead on because it's too early in the morning for that.' The guy looked like he was getting back in his car and got his gun and started shooting."

Investigators say several shots were fired. Two of them hit Tanksley. Then Tanksley crawled inside the store for help.

That's when deputies say Davis fled the scene in his Cadillac. 30 minutes later police found him at his aunt's house on 8th Avenue. Davis surrendered at the scene.

"He just took his gun out and shot my brother twice for no reason," said Cheryl Grant. "It's getting bad. Just getting worser and worser, and they need to get the guns of the street."

"These are things that happen everyday in this life that we are living. It's sad it really is sad but all we can do is pray about it," Harris said.

Those family members are also praying for Juan Tanksley's quick recovery. He is at MCG right now.
