We have an update on a story about an Augusta landlord accused of providing less than desirable living conditions.

Robert DeMello is making improvements to the homes to bring them up to code. We found DeMello working on the homes on Sibley Street with his own two hands.

It's a step in the right direction to getting the homes fixed...but at 43 code violations per house, he's got a lot of work left to do.

For the first time in more than two weeks of trying to track him down, 12 On Your Side was happy to find Robert DeMello. The feeling wasn't mutual.

Jeff Anderson: Mr. Demello?

Robert DeMello: Yes.

JA: We're from News 12. Can we get a comment from you?

RD: Nope.

JA: How are things going with getting things fixed up?

RD: I'm not going to tell you, sir.

He wasn't interested in talking, but he was fixing up several of the homes Richmond County Code Enforcement recently said were in nearly unlivable conditions.

Click here to read the story in which 12 On Your Side exposed the dilapidated properties.

Code Enforcement said the six homes they looked at had 43 violations each, and DeMello had to get things fixed quickly or he would be prosecuted.

Two and a half weeks afterwards, DeMello and a team of three other men were making improvements to the homes. When 12 on your side tried to talk to one of the workers, DeMello was not happy.

Robert DeMello may never talk to 12 On Your Side, but code enforcement says he does have to get these homes fixed...which it looks like he is.

Richmond County Code Enforcement officers say they are continuing to make sure DeMello is making good on repairing the homes. If they aren't fixed properly, he could still be taken to court.
