A body was found this morning at Double Gate Court and Walden Drive. That's off Highland Avenue, near Gordon Highway.
Neighbors there tell us they hear gunshots often...now, there's a body.
The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Jeffrey Leon Labord, an employee of the Richmond County Traffic Engineering Department.
Investigators say a newspaper carrier found the body during the morning route and called the sheriff's office around 5 o'clock this morning. But they say it started a few hours earlier when about a half dozen neighbors called 911 reporting gunshots in the area.
That's about the time they believe Labord was shot.
Labord's vehicle was found later in the morning behind a vacant house on McElmurray Drive, and Labord's home on Artmus Street had been burglarized.
Investigators are interviewing witnesses to figure out the cause of the shooting and the possible relationship between the people involved. No suspects have been idenfitied at this time.
Investigators are also waiting for test results that will tell them exactly how Labord died. They have confirmed one gunshot to the head, but we're waiting on the official autopsy.
Police are treating this as a murder investigation and are offering a cash reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for Labord's death.
We talked to a woman who lives right next door to this morning's crime scene. We'll hear her story tonight on news 12 First at Five.
