47th Annual Chitlin Strut draws in large crowd and dollars to Salley

Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012

SALLEY, S.C. -- It's an event that draws thousands of people to a town that only has about 400 people living there.

It starts with a pig. Some call it a Southern tradition or an unusual delicacy.

Saturday was full of festivities for all. From rides to a hog-calling contest, the 47th Annual Chitlin Strut kicked off with a bang.

The Strut drew in many visitors and dollars to the city.

"It helps offset some different cost, especially with the economy the way it is. It really helps with the economy bad, but we've been doing it for 47 years, so it helps offset some of our cost and keeps taxes down," said Police and Fire Commissioner Paul Sally.

The funds from the Strut greatly impacts the community.

"Different things that we couldn't ordinarily purchase for the town off of tax dollars, different upgrades to our facilities down here," he said.

One visitor celebrated her birthday and fourth year at the Chitlin Strut.

"I am very excited, I enjoy myself," said Linda Taylor.

She has been looking forward to this day.

"I've been here since Wednesday, so we have a whole lot of of us people here from different parts of Georgia, my family, and we have a big gathering every year," Taylor said.

The strut also had concession stands, arts and crafts, beauty pageants, helicopter rides and a car and bike show.

Pictures with Santa Clause, an idol contest and the helicopter ride were just added to the festival this year.

Chitlin plates were sold fried and boiled from the building for $10 a plate.
