A Harlem High School teacher has resigned after a complaint was filed with the Columbia Co. Sheriff's Office alleging that she had an inappropriate relationship with a 16 year old student.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office told the school board about allegations a parent made against 28-year-old Melissa Chase, a softball coach at Harlem High. The board then asked Chase for her resignation.
The relationship between Chase and the student was apparently consensual, with at least one instance of inappropriate sexual activity.
The investigation is ongoing, and a report will be filed with the Professional Standards Commission. Chase is being processed at the Columbia County Detention Center.
