Some elderly, disabled sex offenders don't have to move

October 30, 2006

They're old and disabled, they're on Georgia's sex offender registry, and they live too close to churches.

Should they have to move?

Several men who faced eviction from their nursing homes will be allowed to stay...for now.

A new law that took effect July 1 restricts offenders from living within a thousand feet of a church.

The Southern Center for Human Rights is representing the men. Their attorney says agreements have been reached with sheriffs for six of nine sex offenders.

Richmond, Burke and Columbia County sheriffs were also named in the suit.
