A young teen is in the hospital after falling from a ride on the opening night of the Georgia-Carolina State Fair in Augusta.
The victim is 13-year-old Desire Northington, an eighth grader at Tubman Middle School. She reportedly fell from a ride called the Orbiter and hit a ride next to it called the Spider.
The girl's best friend tells News 12 she was on the ride with Desire. She says that they weren't strapped in, but there was a bar across the seats. The friend says Desire slipped under the bar and flew 20 feet in the air before falling to the ground.
Desire's grandmother, Beverly Biddings, tells News 12 Desire is in critical condition at the Children's Medical Center. Biddings says Desire has pressure on her brain and that a tube has been placed to relieve it.
It is unclear at this time whether the girl will recover.
State labor department ride inspectors have been busy this morning looking into the accident.
They wrapped up their investigation around noon. They found nothing wrong with the ride or the operation of the ride. It has been reinspected and recertified and will reopen.
They're telling News 12 they're not sure yet how the accident happened.
We will have the history of the Orbiter tonight on News 12 First at Five.
