A mother and child have died in an accident on Highway 56 near International Paper in Augusta. It happened around 1:15 this afternoon.
A USA truck driven by Thomas Lattimore of Ohio was headed north on Mike Padgett Highway. Lattimore pulled over into the acceleration lane to check his directions, and turned on his hazard lights.
A Chevy Astro van drifted over and rear-ended the truck.
The driver of the van, a woman in her mid-30's, was pronounced dead on the scene, as was a female child, 3 to 4 years old, riding in the back seat of the van in a car seat. A male child, 6 to 8 years old, also a passenger in the van, was transported to MCG. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
The driver of the truck may face charges, as it is illegal to park in the acceleration lane.
