SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Family members say four Georgians killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 16 were transporting packages, traveling on business and going to the doctor when tragedy struck.
Joel Moore of Clyo left home early Wednesday to travel to a meeting with co-workers at International Paper. Michael J. Smith of Covington was on the job as a contract truck-driver for FedEx. And Clayton and Josephine Warnock, a couple from Dublin, were heading to Atlanta for a doctor to check his pacemaker.
All of them died early Wednesday as 27 cars, pickup trucks and tractor-trailers braked, swerved and collided in a chain-reaction collision that also sent nine people to a hospital with injuries.
Authorities are investigating whether smoke from nearby fires may have mixed with fog and blinded drivers.
