Reasons behind McBride postponement unclear

Grammy award winner Martina McBride will not be taking the stage in Augusta Saturday.

There are two sides to the story about exactly why that happened.

Augusta National asks permission for extra parking

Augusta National has announced plans for the property they've been purchasing around the club.

They're building a major new parking complex with property they bought from businesses and homeowners, and they're asking the city for variances to allow for the lots.

The plans call for 5000 new spaces. The club says the lots will have a pastoral appearance, with soft lighting, landscaping, and buffer zones near homes.

It will take a while. They plan to finish by 2010.

East Augusta residents protest proposed vodka distillery

People from east Augusta packed into commission chambers Tuesday to oppose a company that wants to make vodka.

Business owner Gerald Blount asked commissioners to rezone land off Sand Bar Ferry Road so he could build a vodka distillery, to be called the Little Red Dog.

But neighbors say they already have problems with drugs and alcohol. They say with schools nearby, this is not the place.

Residents also brought a petition with over 400 signatures to the meeting.

When this came up for a vote, commissioners were split on a 5-4 vote, so no action was taken.

Blount says he doesn't plan to continue fighting this, but he'll look to locate in Aiken or Columbia County.
