Larke, BOE make arrangements to move forward

Dr. Charles Larke will discuss the details of his retirement in a news conference this morning.

The Richmond County superintendent signed an amended contract Thursday ending five months of negotiations between himself and the school board.

Dr. Larke will not step down until October 31, but the board is wasting no time to move forward.

They'll meet tomorrow to discuss plans for a nationwide search for his replacement.

They will not start interviewing candidates until after November's election.

The new superintendent will not be announced until after the first of the year.

Aiken hosts Gold Cup Polo Championship

The Gold Cup Polo Championship was the event of the weekend in Aiken. Fans got a chance to see one of the best players in the world in action.

Adolfo Cambiaso came all the way from Argentina to play in Aiken.

Others traveled from other countries including South Africa to see and play in the games.

This is the second year Aiken has been chosen to host the tournament. All Gold Cup polo events are played at New Bridge Polo Fields.

Games for the Cup continue every Thursday and Sunday until the finals on October 1.

26th annual Arts in the Heart big hit

Many gathered over the weekend to celebrate the culture of Augusta at the 26th annual Arts in the Heart festival.

Thousands came out to enjoy music, crafts, and ethnic food.

This year's feature was Indian cuisine.

Arts in the Heart is sponsored by the Augusta Arts Council, which may lose more than $300,000 in the city's proposed budget cuts.

Board of Elections meets today concerning mayor's residency

The Board of Elections will hold a special a meeting today to determine the validity of a residency challenge against the mayor.

Diane Moss challenged mayor Deke Copenhaver's residency last Wednesday, claiming that he did not reside in Augusta, but North Augusta.

Copenhaver says he's lived in Augusta for the past eight years.

The meeting will be held at the Municipal Building at 6 o'clock this evening.

Board members will also discuss polling locations for precincts 304 and 310.

Teenage narcotics suspect shot in police sting

A Hephzibah teenager is still recovering after being shot by an officer.

19-year-old Michael Garrett is at MCG after he tried to flee from police at the Food Lion in Grovetown.

Garrett, along with his two passengers, was the suspect of a narcotics investigation.

After he struck two officers with his vehicle, he was then shot in the neck by Sgt. Tripp Penn, a ten-year veteran with the Columbia County Sheriff's Department.

Garrett's passengers were 22-year-old Anderson Levon II and a 15-year old female.

After inspecting their vehicle, officers found drugs, a handgun, and cash.
