More than a month has passed since an Allendale man was shot and killed by a police officer, and today is the first time 33-year-old Michael Moore's family saw the police report.
News 12's Stephanie Baker delivered it to them.
The police department refused our legal request for the public document, and we only got it after our lawyer contacted the city of Allendale.
Michael Moore's family says today is the first time they've seen any official information about the death.
Delores Gooding's grandson was shot and killed by police officer Horace Brunsen in early August. But today, over a month later, Michael Moore's primary caretaker saw the police report for the first time.
"I ain't getting no answers," she told News 12. "Not getting no answers about nothing."
News 12 is trying to find those answers.
Today, Chief Luther Gadsen was not available when we stopped by to ask for Brunsen's personnel file, so we brought the request to finance director Tanya Ward, who contacted the town attorney.
"He said we're in the process of getting it for you now, and we will have it in 15 days," she told us.
Moore's background check shows four prior convictions in roughly 10 years...but were there grounds to kill him during a routine traffic stop?
Last month, Chief Gadsen did not respond to our request for the police report as the law requires.
"So you're not going to give it to us?" we asked.
News 12 only received the report after our attorney contacted the department.
The report says three shots were fired from Officer Brunsen's weapon when Moore tried to resist arrest. But these details were recorded August 22, 11 days after the shooting.
We contacted the Richmond, Columbia, and Aiken County sheriff's offices. All three say reports should be finished and available to the public and the family within 12 hours.
"I can't sleep, I cry all the time," Gooding said. "It's been hard, I'll say that. It's hard."
Officer Brunsen's personnel file, which could have more information on his background, should be available to us by the end of the month. Any information we get we will share with the family.
