There was another shooting in Aiken County early this morning. This makes the third in just one week.
Investigators are still looking for the men responsible.
It happened in a secluded area on Old Pope Road off Vaucluse Road.
The overnight shooting has stunned neighbors, who now realize you never know who may be living right next door.
These days, when Evelyn Withers answers the door, she's a little leery of who's on the other side.
"You never know what's going to happen, and you feel kind of funny when something like this happens," she told News 12.
Especially after gunfire erupts in the middle of the night right next door.
"They're still on the loose, naturally you're going to be a little shaky."
Aiken County authorities say around 1:30 Friday morning, two men kicked down the front door at 19 Old Pope Road. One of them was armed with a shotgun.
After they ransacked 36-year-old Jeffery Battle's home, they demanded his money.
And before they were through, the gunman fired three shots.
Battle survived with wounds in the shoulder and in the thigh.
"It's sad this happened and we live right next door," said Withers.
But this was a neighbor with a rap sheet.
Back in October, Battle was charged with possession of crack cocaine in Aiken County. In 2002 he was charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful carrying of a pistol and a second offense, possession of crack cocaine.
"We recovered small amount of crack cocaine from the victim's home," said Lt. Michael Frank. "This is the most recent example of a drug related crime."
And in what seemed to be a peaceful neighborhood, Evelyn is thinking twice about the people who come and go.
No word yet on Battle's condition. He is considered a no information patient at MCG.
This is the third shooting in Aiken County. At this point, investigators don't believe they're related in any way, but it is something they will investigate.
