Local areas benefit from federal grants

August 23, 2006

Tuesday, Gov. Perdue announced more than $37 million in federal grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In our area, the city of Dearing, Emanuel County, Hancock County, the city of Harlem, McDuffie County, and the cities of Swainsboro, Thomson, Warrenton and Waynesboro are all getting Community Development Block Grant awards.

All totaled, the grants add up to more than $4,280,000.

The money can be spent on everything from recreation to housing and sewer improvements.

Emanuel County and Waynesboro are also getting award money from the Community Home Investment Program. It's for communities that are trying to help people with low and moderate incomes.
