AUGUSTA, Ga.---2008 or 2009, to the tiny newborns it makes no difference. But being the first babies born in the new year sure gets some attention and it will make a pretty good story for later.

Just a few hours into his young life, Kaleb Elizjah Brodwater makes his television debut. A little bundle of joy born at 12:28 a.m. on January 1st, 2009.

Kaleb's mother, Katrice wasn't quite ready for all that fuss that comes with having the first Augusta baby in the new year. "I didn't expect it, so it's still a surprise to me," says Katrice Brodwater.

Now she's ready to get her baby boy home. "I'm excited. Ready to go home," Katrice says.

Katrice may be surprised by her baby's birth date, but some family members knew January first would be the day. "I had a very strong idea," says Kaleb's great-grandmother Charlotte Garrett.

While Doctor's Hospital may have had the very first New Years baby, Trinity hospital wasn't too far behind. Little Emmie Sloan Nay was born at 1:43 am.

"I just thought we were gonna go in and get it done and all of a sudden it's the rush to be the new year's baby," says new mother Carly Nay.

Trinity hospital was just as excited, giving Emmie a bed full of goodies. "It's a nice story. I told my husband she's our first child, she was born on the first, and she was the first one at Trinity," says Carly.

Starting a family, a New Year's resolution Carly can check off her list. "This is the best start to the new year," says Carly.

And across the river at Aiken Regional, the first baby there was Elexis Alize Savon Joyner. She came late in the morning at 7:33 after a long 17 hours in labor. "We just thought she was never gonna come," says her father Davon Joyner.

Davon Joyner says his wife Kizzy was on a mission to have their fifth child be the first at Aiken Regional. "She said, 'Well I'm gonna hold out until the new year' and that's what she did," says Davon.

A special day for some special families. It's one they'll never forget.
