AUGUSTA, Ga.-- Myrtle Maness may have opened her door, but she wasn't about to let anyone in.
"Well it's frightening. It's really frightening. Because for the grace of God it could have been me," Myrtle Maness said.
Myrtle says a man knocked on her door Monday afternoon and said he was from Comcast but she said they had the wrong house. Then the men went to another house on Ware Road in Augusta. Investigators say an 82-year-old lady let a man into her house who acted like he had paperwork for her to sign. Then another man knocked on the door saying he needed some water to take a pill or he was going to die. While she got the water, the other man took off with her purse. The victim's son says his mother remembers seeing one of the men a year ago when he told them he was with Georgia Power. So the scam has changed a bit, but the targets are the same, the elderly.
"That's the easiest people to steal from because they can't protect themselves," Maness said.
Investigators say do not allow anyone in your house that you haven't made an appointment with.
"Do not open the door. If you do not know who it is, do not open the door. And that's my policy, but that's one time I didn't stick to my policy," Maness said.
A policy we can all learn from.
Investigators say the two suspects are two white males. One of the men is 30 years-old, 5-7 to 5-8, 145-155 pounds, brown hair, and was wearing a yellow, red, and black sweater and blue jeans.
The second suspect is between 60 and 65-years-old, 5-9 to 5-10, 160-170 pounds, wearing a blue/gray sweater with a design on the front.
The men were driving a middle 90's model white Chevy truck with a regular cab with two doors. The truck has a white tag with black writing. Witnesses say there was some kind of engine on the back of the truck.
