Children in Richmond County head back to school in a week.

For lots of children, a big part of starting a new school year is starting it with a fresh haircut.

But for some parents with low incomes or with multiple children, it can be expensive.

Some area barbers are pitching in to clip that cost.

For the fifth year, Radio One of Augusta gathered barbers from all over the CSRA at May Park. Monday is a day barbers typically take off, but today they spent it continuously cutting for free.

Monique Thomas' kids are getting ready to head back to school. She couldn't afford for all of them to get haircuts, so she's appreciative of what others are doing to clip the cost.

"I have three boys here getting their haircuts today," she told News 12. "When you have a budget, a low income, it's very good."

This free haircut project started as a small idea and has grown into a big community event.

"A lot of people have come back year after year," says Portia Ryerson of Radio One. "It's something they look forward to."

And there's something for the girls too. Local beauty stores donated accessories like bows and barrettes.

Though it's a free service given only once a year, it's the reaction to the fresh fades and tight tapers that these barbers say makes it all worth it.

"Just the smile we put on their face once we give them the haircut, it's a good thing," says Danny Hill of Clean Cuts.

We're told the final tally on haircuts at May Park today was 200.

A similar program was held at Macedonia Baptist Church today. About 75 haircuts were given by three local barbers, free of charge.

Children also walked away with bags of school supplies all donated by church members.
