Donell Jerome Weatherspoon was arrested Wednesday after investigators found that his wife Christine had a bruise on her stomach.
Reports say an argument over a cell phone started the incident.
Weatherspoon has been a jailer since December 2000.
Weatherspoon is now out on bond. He is suspended without pay until his case comes before a sheriff's review board.
