2-year-old dies of asphyxiation; charges pending

Criminal charges are pending in the suffocation death of a two year old boy.

Jonathan Brice Dungan died sometime between late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, but his lifeless body was not discovered until later that morning by his aunt.

The tragic event took place at 6 Lake Forest Court in Augusta.

Paramedics were called to the house around 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Efforts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful. Richmond County authorities arrived on the scene shortly after.

The child's mother, Kimberly Dungan Price, was away with the child's stepfather, John Price. The young boy's aunt, Michelle Whitmore of Aiken, was caring for Brice and his older sister.

Authorities say the two children fell asleep Monday night on separate couches in the living room and went unchecked until the next morning. Investigators believe Brice had been dead for several hours before he was discovered.

An autopsy showed Brice died of asphyxiation. The case has been ruled a homicide. Investigators say principals in the case have been identified and charges will be filed.

A graveside service will be held tomorrow at the Westhover Memorial Park in Augusta at 11 am.
