Judge rules Georgia Voter ID law illegal; state appeals

Just three days before early voting starts in the July 18 primary, Georgia's new voter ID law is in limbo once again.

Fulton County Judge Melvin Westmoreland ruled the afternoon of July 7 that the requirement for a government-issued photo ID is illegal

Governor Sonny Perdue has said the state has filed a notice of immediate appeal. "I respectfully disagree with Judge Westmoreland, and believe that Georgia’s law is not only constitutional, but a common sense, prudent protection of the election process," he said in a statement.

A separate federal lawsuit on the same issue will be heard next Wednesday, July 12.
