Fourth of July a big day for barbecue

Video will be available shortly.

July 4, 2006

A big Fourth of July tradition is barbeque. It's so popular that some places ran out of food.

Firing up the grill at home is a tradition for many families.

Others like to bring it home from their favorite restaurant. Lots of people seemed to have that idea this year, because some places ran out of food early Tuesday morning.

10:00 in the morning seems a little early to eat barbecue. But by then, William James and his family missed most of the food at Sconyers.

"Nah, I wasn't surprised at all," James said. "They were really packed early."

Early, as in 5:30 a.m.

A few hours later...

"We're just about out of pork, all the ribs are gone, the turkey's about gone," said owner Larry Sconyers.

Sconyers and his staff stayed up most of the night getting ready for what he calls their busiest year yet.

"The department stores have Christmas, we have Fourth of July. It's truly Christmas in July."

The tradition is the main reason Charles Stone and his wife Verla get up so early on their holiday off.

"Mainly so we could get it before they ran out," Verla said. "But guess what? They ran out!"

The early birds got the barbeque...and the rest had to cook at home.
