ONE LOCAL HOSPITAL IS MAKING SURE THEY HAVE ENOUGH STAFF ON HAND...
FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY...
DOCTORS HOSPITAL HAS ALREADY SEEN ABOUT TEN PEOPLE BEAUSE OF FIREWORKS INJURIES...
AS NEWS 12'S DOMONIQUE BENN REPORTS, THE BURN UNIT IS EXPECTING MORE BEFORE THE HOLIDAY IS OVER...
IT'S A BUSY DAY AT THE BURN UNIT AT DOCTORS HOSPITAL...
SINCE SATURDAY DR. FRED MULLINS HAS SEEN ABOUT 10 FIREWORKS INJURIES...
CALLS FROM MISSISSIPPI, ALABAMA, TENNESSEE, NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND GEORGIA SO FAR.
Mullins: "I've seen two children so far this weekend with sparkler injuries."
DR. MULLINS SAYS THERE'S AN INCREASE IN EMERGENCIES WITH ALL HOLIDAYS...
LAST YEAR, MORE THAN 23 FIREWORKS INJURIES CAME IN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY...
AND THAT'S WHY THERE'S STAFF ON STANDBY.
Mullins: "We're also see displays that shoot up in the air people get too close to them and they actually shoot into them and catch their clothing on fire."
THE BURN UNIT USES A HIGH VOLUME OF BLOOD...
THEY'VE HAD TO DIP INTO THEIR SUPPLY TO HELP SOME OF THE PATIENTS THAT HAVE ALREADY COME IN.
Mullins: "We already had a couple of large burns this weekend that will require multiple transfusions and one of them had already had multiple transfusions."
AND WITH ALL OF THE INJURIES DR. MULLINS HAS SEEN...
HE RECOMMENDS LEAVING THE FIREWORKS TO THE EXPERTS.
IN AUGUSTA, DOMONIQUE BENN, NEWS 12.
