Craig Baldwin is behind bars, arrested last night at an Asheville, North Carolina hotel.
Now, he is fighting extradition from North Carolina.
Don't expect to see Craig Baldwin back in Aiken anytime soon. Authorities tell News 12 Baldwin's next court date is July 21.
Until then, he will sit in a Buncombe County jail cell.
Baldwin was arrested last night at the Rock Haven Motel. Motel workers tell us Baldwin had been at the motel for three nights.
Asheville authorities found Baldwin's vehicle at the motel an hour and a half after getting information that Baldwin might be in their area. Capt. Mike Davis with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department spotted the car in the motel parking lot.
Capt. Davis says Baldwin smelled of alcohol when he was arrested. He says various bottles of prescription drugs and over the counter drugs were found in Baldwin's room. Capt. Davis also said that when told he was wanted for murder in Aiken, Baldwin said he had no idea what authorities were referring to.
The Aiken County Department of Public Safety believes Baldwin murdered his mother, Dale Baldwin, on June 16. Her body was found wrapped in a sheet in her front yard last Friday.
When asked where he had been before stopping in Asheville, Baldwin confirmed he had visited Kentucky but did not mention his daughter's wedding, which he attended the day after his mother's body was found.
Capt. Davis also says once Baldwin was in custody, he asked Baldwin who should be listed as his emergency contact. Baldwin's response was his mother.
So it seems as if there are more questions than answers right now.
There is still no word on a cause of death for Dale Baldwin. Sgt. David Turno of Aiken Public Safety says her body was so badly decomposed that we may never know for sure how she was killed.
