Local elections officials are preparing to provide free voter ID cards to those who need them before next month's Georgia primary.
The new law requires all registered voters to present a photo ID when voting, and poll workers will not make any exceptions.
80-year-old Irene Lamar has always had an identification card, but she says it's surprising how many senior citizens don't.
"It's a lot of them my age really don't have them," she says.
And without one, registered voters will not be able to cast a ballot in upcoming elections starting with the primaries in July.
88-year-old Dorothy Johnson is prepared.
"I always had an ID," she says.
Lawmakers decided to require a photo ID or voter ID to cut down on voter fraud.
"They ain't going to hardly let you vote if you ain't got an ID," Dorothy says.
"The law in Georgia says right now, unless something changes, it says right now if you are going to vote you are going to have to show a photo ID, period," says Lynn Bailey, director of the Richmond County Board of Elections.
And to make sure every registered voter has a photo ID, Georgia has provided all 159 counties with photo id equipment--a computer, printer, and camera.
Bailey says everyone in her office has been trained.
"We'll issue a temporary paper card, and then, within about three weeks, a voter would then receive their real voter ID card in the mail," she says.
The photo ID card that the Board of Elections will issue can only be used for voting purposes.
If transportation is a problem in getting a voter photo ID, the Board of Elections recommends casting an absentee vote, where a photo ID is not needed. However, there are other security measures that are taken to make sure you are the person you say you are when absentee voting.
Advance voting for the Georgia primary is just over a week away; it starts Monday, July 10.
You now have three places to cast your early ballot in Augusta: the municipal building on Greene Street, the Henry Brigham Community Center, and the Warren Road Community Center. Polls are open from 7 to 7.
The actual primary is July 18.
