Judge temporarily blocks law; sex offenders don't have to move

Late Thursday afternoon, June 29, a federal judge temporarily blocked Georgia's law preventing registered sex offenders from living near school bus stops.

The decision came after eight people, including two locals, challenged the new law in a federal lawsuit.

The law was supposed to take effect Saturday, July 1.

It prohibits sex offenders from living, working or loitering within a thousand feet of just about anywhere that children gather, including schools, churches, parks, gyms, swimming pools and any of the state's 150,000 school bus stops.

There's another hearing July 11, but the state is preparing an appeal of Thursday's decision to the Federal Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
