AUGUSTA, Ga --Richmond County deputy Ronnie Collins was fired this morning from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Strength says he fired Deputy Ronnie Collins for not being honest with the sheriff's office about his questionable behavior before he was rehired.

That behavior centers around an alleged sex scandal at Spirit Creek Middle School last year.

Louis Svehla, Public Information Director with the Richmond County School System, says the investigation is still ongoing into the allegations that faculty and staff members had sex in the school last school year during school hours.

Collins worked as a Public Safety Officer at Spirit Creek Middle School with the Richmond County School system until April of this year, when he resigned and went back to work at the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Strength says the Sheriff's Office did not find out about the investigation until they were notified by the school board last week.

Louis Svehla talked with News 12 about where the investigation stands now. "The thing that makes is a story with us and why there is an investigation is that it did happen potentially and alleged on school grounds.. Board property is board property. It's not considered the privacy of your home or your off time."

Richmond County Internal Affairs says Collins had worked on and off for the Sheriff's Office for four and a half years and had had no other disciplinary problems until now.

News 12 went to Ronnie Collins' home today for comment and for his side of the story, but no one answered.

We do know he worked as a Public Safety Officer for Richmond County for six years.

The alleged scandal didn't make waves until an e-mail was sent to the school system this school year.

"Allegedly, whenever it happened, whether it was during school hours, if it was weekends, at night, whenever it happened if it's on board property, it becomes a board concern." says Svehla.

The investigation was supposed to be wrapped up this week, but the investigator assigned to the case says he needs more time to question more people.

Svehla, "The fact that any of this could potentially have some truth behind it, it's bad for everybody, not just the students but they certainly are our main concern."

Dr. Dana Bedden tells News 12 if any current employees are found guilty they too, may lose their job.

Internal Affairs says Sheriff Ronnie Strength made the decision this morning and, in accordance to protocol, Chief Deputy Sid Hatfield was the one to fire Collins.

So far, Ronnie Collins is the only person implicated who has been punished.

Sometimes it is best to sweep around ones own doorstep before trying to sweep around someone elses! His children have been subjected to this and have nothing at all to do with it...so when are we going to see the pictures of the teacher and "other" staff member that were a party to this incident..lets just hope because who they are or who they are married to doesnt keep them from the spotlight!!!!!!

I am praying for the family. God will step in right on time.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there UFB. And a very good point. Legitimate too. So what would newscasters do in a situation where they were in the wrong and THEIR info was an open book for all to see. We are all human and we all do make mistakes. I just hope they are given more professional courtesy than what's been give to the LE that have been plastered all over the news the last few months.

Posted by: doobie on Oct 13, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Too late now UFB. They've already put it out there. FOR ALL THE WORLD (including the one's he's arrested).

Posted by: UFB Location: AUG on Oct 12, 2008 at 09:57 AM
One other question for Lynnsey; even though you went to his house, why did you feel the need to videotape your approach to the house? There is a reason why LE people like to remain anonymous. Now you have plastered his house all over the news. Don't newscasters use fake names for the same reason? How would you like it if someone found out where you lived and provided a videotape for the world to see? Asking for his story is one thing, but videotaping your walk to the house is quite another. I think that in your zeal to scoop an interview, your left your common sense behind.

Ya know, no matter the outcome of this, this Deputy has been tried by his peers. And with what evidence? I think the News staff should be ashamed of all the "biting information" they put out on these people. Now what happens if it's found out this guy had nothing to do with this mess? Guess what! Too Late! You've picked his jury for him and pretty much hung him. We will never know the outcome because all you put out is the nastiness that you find FROM A SOURCE. If your gonna start something, finish it. Even if you have to eat a little crow in the end. I really don't get you people. It seems you feed off of the (word removed) you can put out on law enforcement. These guys are held to a higher standard...until they mess up. Oh excuse me. Their HUMAN. Everyone wants to criticise LE but no one hesitates to call on them when they are in need. I truly hope none of this is true. And even if it is, I'll still say a prayer for him and his family.

Did you call his house first to see if he wanted to talk to you? How arrogant of you to go to his house and even remotely think that he would answer the door and talk to you unannounced. That shows a lack of professionalism on your part. But, that's not really news now, is it? How would you feel if your business was aired all over the news and a reporter from another station showed up at your house unannounced? Unprofessional scooping is what you are doing.

To UFB and Anonymous, the reason we went to Ronnie Collins home is simple. As journalists, we know it is our job to get both sides of the story. The Sheriff and the Board of Education have given their side thus far, and Ronnie Collins and anyone else implicated in this investigation, and possibly found guilty of the inappropriate conduct will also have their own side. Whether or not Collins or anyone else chooses to speak to us on camera or off camera, is their call. And, if we did not attempt to get Ronnie Collins side at all, I'm sure their would have been post on this story attacking us for not trying to get a comment from Ronnie Collins.

I am praying for the family because this will affect all of them.God is the only judge ,we all have our secrets!

Why have'nt more people been identified. This school has a lot of problems and needs to be closed or someone responsible to come in and run it

Posted by: anonymous Location: ga on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:20 PM
all it takes is one accusation and the news and newspapers to get it out there and everyone has done found you guilty. In this country you are no longer innocent until proven guilty, that's why you have so may pleas anymore along with the prosecutors cheap shot by having grand jury hearings without the other side standing up for themselves.

I think that if you are going to cover the news and report on the officer why not report on the teacher and (removed) involved also.He wasn't the only one involved and did you go to the women's houses also? This man has a family but of course you were only interested in obtaining a story. Did you think once that the wife may have not known? Did you once consider how her and their kids would feel?

Posted by: MB Location: Hephzibah on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:06 PM
As a member of the Hephzibah community, I think the media should be clear on who is actually involved in this scandal. Stop making it sound like it's the entire faculty. It's a couple teachers and ONE member of the administration.

Posted by: Laci Location: Augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:39 PM
I wonder how it is that some officers have a chance to resign or be fired and others are just fired. I'm comparing this incident to the one where the officer was caught ON TAPE using derogatory language about blacks. He was given an option, but this guy gets fired for being accused of something...hmmm something just isn't right.

Posted by: D Location: Augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:28 PM
So what happens when you "loose" your job?

Posted by: perry Location: augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:13 PM
hey the reporter is doing her job, reporting... i can only imagine what goes on in the schools, has anyone ever gone to one of these high schools during school hours? it's a joke and student are blatant rude to teachers, no respect. We need more cops than robbers, so lets not fire them all!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: grovetown on Oct 10, 2008 at 06:32 PM
I agree with UFB. WHY would you go to his house. Have a heart for the families involved!!! There is more important news to cover. The coverage of this "story" is so RUDE.

Posted by: UFB Location: AUG on Oct 10, 2008 at 06:06 PM
Ok, Lynnsey, what did you hope to gain by going to the officers house? Are you a reporter or a stalker?

Posted by: mrs c Location: augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 05:48 PM
why are we so quick to judge one another. i know him personally and i don't think that he will do something like that. There are some honest officers out there, give credit where credit is due.......you can't put everyone in the same category.

Posted by: Terry Location: home on Oct 10, 2008 at 05:16 PM
No, they are not all bad. We are not even sure this one is "all that". There has not been a trial, just accusations and an ongoing investigation at the school. He shouldn't have neglected to tell Strength he was being investigated at the school, that is the firing offense. But morale is shaken every time something like this comes up, I'm sure.

Posted by: Michelle Location: Augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 02:37 PM
Do you truly think that all officers are not honest? Just because you have a few that "screw up" doesn't mean they are all bad. Everyone is always quick to judge. There are many very HONEST officers that serve Richmond County, many that have been there for years and years. The issue is that there is too much discrimination in the department, where individuals are getting promotions over others that are much less qualified. And if they didn't get promoted, they would scream racism! It is really quite silly. It's too bad, because I know of a few individuals that are held back and are even contemplating quitting to work for Columbia County or Plant Vogal or North Augusta. It is actually kind of sad. I know Sheriff Strength is doing the best he can with what is given to him, but unfortunately these things are still happening within the department.

Posted by: Rebel Location: Evans on Oct 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM
How are they going to fire a deputy during a ongoing investigation. I think the Sheriff's Office jumped the gun on this one. What if all persons denies anything went on? Hmmm No video or tapes. Hmmm

Posted by: Mary Location: Aiken on Oct 10, 2008 at 01:50 PM
I'm sure there are many guilty people involved and I think it's unfair that this guy was singled out so soon and his arrest made public before all the others.

' .. .the allegations that faculty and staff members had sex in the school last school year during school hours . . ' And you seriously believe that last year is the ONLY year this has happened in Richmond County schools???

Posted by: Ron Location: augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 01:25 PM
He is the only one fired, So what did he have sex with hiself.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 10, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Honest officers ?? What a joke !! The only ones the officers are protecting is theirselves. Officers like the idea of being "above the law" and think they can do whatever they want to do. They use their "power" and the badge to make people think they are high and mighty. Between the speed traps and the "I'll rub your back if you rub mine" crap, I doubt you will find an honest officer, well, at least not in Augusta.

Posted by: john Location: aiken county on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Faculty and staff, hmmmm...were they on their lunch hour?

Posted by: Diane Location: Augusta on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:55 AM
With all the "firings" going on at the heriff's Office we will soon be down to a "one man" operation..... Where are all those honest officers that were hired to serve??????
