AUGUSTA, Ga.---The Augusta License and Inspection Department is taking charge and making sure that repairs get done for the residents living at the Hi Port Regency Apartments. The repairs will help ensure they have better living conditions.

News 12 first broke the story of the unlivable conditions at Hi Port Regency a month ago. For months, requests for repairs had fallen on deaf ears. Now changes are coming for the better.

On Thursday the Augusta Building Code Inspection Department met with the management and owner of Hi Port Regency. The outcome is this:

-- All tenants in condemned buildings will be relocated to a renovated unit
-- No eviction notices will be enforced
-- Inspectors will walk through all of the units to see what repairs need to be done in the non-condemned buildings
-- The building code enforcement office will oversee all contractors
for the project to make sure a reasonable timeline is "followed"
-- The work will be done at the expense of the Hi Port Regency owner.

The Augusta License and Inspection Department says they were just as shocked to learn about the conditions these folks were living in as the rest of us, and that's why they acted as quickly as possible. From Commissioner Calvin Holland to the code enforcement inspectors, the goal was to get the repairs done and to get them done right.

I have be in contact with the tenants that live in the condemned buildings since this story aired. This company is lying through their teeth. Robin Scott the Regional Manager has told three of the tenants that live in these condemned buildings that city said they had to be out within 30 days and that the power to the condemned buildings will be shut off at the end of the 30 days. You state that they will not be evicting any tenants, but they are trying to force them out with lies and most of them don't know any better. They don't all know their rights as tenants. I really hope you will step in and make sure they can't tell lies like this and get away with it. I know you will stay on top of this story. I will be looking forward to the next story you do on this, because it's not over by far. This company is trying to just get these tenants to move out on their own so they don't have to uphold city's descions. We can't let that happen. Thanks, Alice Romero

Hi, I am so happy the tenants are getting the help they need. I really am proud of Melissa Tune for caring so much, Commissioner Holland for taking the time to come out and check on the tenants that live their and for City License and Inspections for taking over and foreseeing the repairs and responsibility of these tenants. The next thing that needs to be checked into is the way this company has paid people in the past. This is why people weren't getting anything fixed. Someone has to make sure they don't keep hiring people and then reaping them off of their money. This would keep tenants from waiting weeks on repairs to be done. I'm sure these tenants would like to know what is going to be a timely matter too. Some tenants have had issues for years. I will be looking forward to updates about these tenants. Great job! Thanks, Alice Romero
