Augusta, Ga.--- It happened around 7:30 Monday night. A pedestrian was trying to cross Gordon Highway, near a car dealership and North Leg Road.

"At this time the pedestrian is at fault. In this case there was no crossing area where she was crossing at," CPL. Danny Whitehead said.

They say the driver of this oldsmobile entrigue hit 47-year-old Wendy Williams of Augusta. She was trying to cross a six lane highway.

Deputies say Williams was trying to cross the East bound lanes on Gordon Highway when she was struck and killed. Her body went under the car and was dragged 125 feet.

Deputies say there were no signs the driver ever hit the brakes.

"It was terrible. It was terrible, but the traffic is just too fast right through here. People just zoom through here all day long. It's just too fast," Carol Lisenbee said.

Deputies spent the day looking for an oldsmobile entrigue with front end damage. They found the car just a few miles away at a house on Tubman Home Road. Officers say a family member of the driver lives there. And they're still looking for that driver. On average, there are about 100 to 130 hit and run accidents a month in Richmond County.

"People leave the scene for various reasons. Anywhere from driving under a suspended license to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They may just get scared, panicked, and leave the scene for whatever it may be," CPL. Whitehead said.

The Sheriff's Office is still looking for the driver of that oldsmobile. News 12 spoke with the driver's family and they say she just panicked.

The body of 47-year-old Wendy Williams is being sent to North Carolina for burial.
