Only on News 12 at 6 o'clock, October 6, 2008

AUGUSTA, Ga -- Only on 12 tonight. The Georgia State Board of
Funeral Services launches an investigation into Dent's Undertaking Establishment after News 12 calls-in one family's story.

It started last night (Sunday, October 5) at Dent's. News 12's Lynnsey Gardner was there with cameras rolling, she's in our newsroom with the latest.

The Gowdy family is crying foul after the condition they found Joshua Gowdy's body last night, five days after they turned him over to the care of Dent's Undertaking Establishment.

"They just done messed my Daddy up! They just done messed him up!" cries Yvonne Gowdy. It was an emotional and disturbing Sunday evening for the Gowdy family at Dent's Undertaking Establishment.

Franklin Dunn is Joshua Gowdy's stepson. "That's not my Daddy laying in there, this is my Daddy and that body laying in there don't look nothing like my father. If that's my father, than they done really did something really bad."

This is how the family remembers 74-year-old Joshua Gowdy, but instead they are now left with a very troubling last image -- "He's swollen. There's blood running out of his nose, blood running out of his ears. The casket is soaked. It's filthy." says Kahtonna Allen, Gowdy's granddaughter.

And that's not all, Yvonne Gowdy, Joshua Gowdy's daughter, "Flies in there, the scent in there stink. You have to cover your face up to go in there."

The Coroner's Office says Joshua Gowdy died of a heart attack while sleeping on Wednesday morning. The Gowdy family took photos from inside Dent's and News 12 showed them to Richmond County's Coroner, Grover Tuten. "We compared the photos you showed me with the photos we took at the residence and they're unrecognizable. It doesn't look like the same person. He's someone who has been abused. Easiest way I can put it, that body has been abused."

The Coroner says that's because in his professional opinion, Gowdy's remains were not properly cared for -- the question -- was Mr. Gowdy ever embalmed?

News 12 tried to talk with the Director Sunday night, twice, trying to get answers.

We came back today (Monday) after Frank Griffin identified himself as the owner and director Sunday night. But, records show the licensed director is Thomasine Ketch.

Gardner, "Mr. Griffin?"
Griffin, "I'm not talking to you."
Gardner, "Is Thomasine Ketch here today?"
Griffin, "No ma'am."
Gardner, "So you still don't have any comment on camera?"
Griffin, "No ma'am."

News 12 did speak with Mr. Griffin off camera yesterday evening. He told reporter Lynnsey Gardner Mr. Gowdy was embalmed on Thursday. Then, a minute and a half later, in that same conversation with Ms. Gardner, Griffin did admit there was a question to if Mr. Gowdy was ever embalmed at all.

Before the body reached Dent's, it was at W. H. May's Mortuary for just over five hours. Two days later, William H Mays III said Frank Griffin called from Dent's with problems. "He said they were having problems with the body and I noticed something was strange because he said we're not able to get any fluid and I said when were y'all able to start your procedure? And, I never got an answer. I never got an answer."

Answers the Gowdy family is still looking for on a day they had to bury their loved one who they no longer recognized as their own.

The family told Ms. Gardner today they had to opt for an empty casket funeral because of the smell and condition of Mr. Gowdy's remains and when they got to the burial site, they could smell the decomposition of Mr. Gowdy's body from the road.

The family told News 12 they paid Dent's Undertaking Establishment a total of almost $9,000.00 and that Dent's has offered to reimburse them half of the embalming fee which on average would come to about $300.00.

News 12's report on the Gowdy Family concerns about Dent's Undertaking showed multiple persons who appear or are identified as employees or the owner of the Funeral Home. Frank Griffin, shown standing outside the business, identified himself as the owner. A second person leaving the Funeral Home in a car along with a third person seen in the business doorway also represented themselves to our reporter as an employees of Dent's.

Erick PLEASE. If this was your loved one you would be doing the exact same thing. Dents and Mays are responsible for their "mistakes"...they dropped the ball and will have to pay for this one. The family is devastated to see him for the last time in a horrible condition. I pray for the family and for your ignorance.

NELLE STOP BLAMEING PEOPLE. GOD KNOWS WHAT HAPPEN AND HE WILL JUSTIFY THAT. LEAVE IT TO HIM AND PRAY FOR EVERYONE THAT THIS MISTAKE WILL BE FORGIVEN AND MOVE ON.

I THINK THAT IT'S MAY'S & DENTS FAULT NOBODY SHOULD BE TREATED THE WAY MR.GOWDY WAS TREATED...MY HEART GOES OUT TO MR. GROWDY'S FAMILY.....

What people should be doing is checking the timelines, which are so important. Was Mr. Gowdy found dead? How long was he deceased before May’s Funeral Home received him? What was the condition of the body when they picked him up? What was the temperature in the place in which he was at the time of death? When May’s picked Mr. Gowdy up, did they immediately take the remains to Dent’s Funeral Home? If not, did they place the remains in refrigeration or since they were going to be transporting the remains to Dent’s did they just leave the remains in the vehicle in which they use to transport remains? Why didn’t they embalm the remains before transporting them to Dent’s and just charge the embalming fee to Dent’s. This is not just a Dent’s Undertaking Establishment issue. This is an issue that May’s Funeral Home needs to answer to as well. Who at May’s Funeral Home picked up the remains? It’s easy to look at the past problems of Dent’s and jump on a SHUT THE DOORS band wagon, without the proper investigation in which should be taking place. I am in no way saying Dent’s is not responsible in any way, because they are. Mr. Gowdy’s family should have been informed of the condition of his remains. There never should have been a viewing allowing the casket to be open. As horrible as this is and my heart goes out to the family. People should not pretend as if May’s Funeral Home doesn’t exist in this mess, because they do. As a matter of fact it started with them.

It is a shame the way the body of Joshua Gowdy was handled by Dent's Funeral Home. My daddy worked with Mr. Gowdy for over forty years. My son who is 34 years old was only 5 years old when he came to know Mr. Gowdy. They should be put out of business. My sympathy to the family.

If Mr. Griffins was not quilty of wrong doing, he would have spoke with the news reporter. Because Ms. Ketch wouldn't have let this happen if she was able to be at the funeral home.Dent's has taken care of family members from great-grandparents,grandparents and parents. The Ketch family was like family to alot of people in the Augusta area. If she was able to continue to operate the funeral home she would have been there. But unfortunately she made a bad chose to let Mr.Griffin run it for her. Ever since he been there you only here how rude he was to families. That's why family members have stop sending their love ones to them. My heart goes out goes out to the Gowdy Family. The Ketch family are really great people.

this is forwarded to antwan...for the comment that you made..that should not even be a issue right now as to how Dent's treated your family. The fact of the matter is, Dent's had no respect for this family nor did they have any respect for their loved one that was in the care of them. Maybe they did do a good job THEN, and that was also prior to them having financial problems. Dont be too quick to speak if you dont know the whole issue. This family is hurting and you will feel the same way if it were you. No one deserved to be treated like this. And to have someone out their trust in you and you totally let them down, everyone that works at Dent's should feel like trash. So i dont care what you say, Historic Dent's needs to be SHUT DOWN FOR GOOD!

Posted by: jb Location: Augusta on Oct 8, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Antwan, You would not be saying that if Dent's treated your father's body that way.

Posted by: gagirl Location: ga on Oct 8, 2008 at 04:54 PM
The fact still remain Dent screwed up. At this point, corrective measures should be taken. And seeing that the damage is done, the only measure I can think of is financial compensation. Don't just say, "Here's $300, better luck next time." And maybe you caught Ms Ketch on a good day. From my personal experience she was very rude to my family and I when attempting to correct a problem. No need for your reply. Thanks!

Posted by: ANTWAN on Oct 8, 2008 at 04:25 PM
EVERYONE MAKING COMMENTS ARE SAYING THAT DENTS SHOULD BE CLOSED. I DONT AGREE. MRS. KETCH WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL WHEN I LOST MY LOVED ONE.SHE WAS COMPASSIONATE AND CARING. I WOULD NEVER EVER THINK OF ANOTHER FUNERAL HOME OTHER THAN DENTS AND I WILL STILL USE THEM FOR MY FAMILY. FRANK GRIFFIN WAS VERY COURTESY TO ME AND MY FAMILY. EDDIE BYNES WAS VERY HELPFUL AND I SHALL NEVER FORGET HIM. THEY HAD THE CLEANEST FACILITES AND THE BEST LOOKING AND MOST MODERN VEHICLES FOR THE FUNERAL SERVICE. DONT WORRY DENTS I AM FOR YOU AND GUESS WHAT THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT FEEL THE SAME WAY. SOMETIMES WHEN MISTAKES HAPPEN PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BRING YOU DOWN. BUT IF GOD BE FOR YOU DENTS WHO CAN BE AGAINST YOU.

This makes me sad that they would do that

Posted by: Lynn on Oct 8, 2008 at 03:11 PM
This is horrible!! this however could mean a couple of things. 1. the body wasn't properly cared for at the previous funeral home. 2. how long was it at the previous funeral home before being turned over to Dents. 3. if a certain number of hours passed the previous funeral should have embalmed the body before it went to Dents. 4. There seems to be a breakdown somewhere because the condition of the body is a result of unsatisfactory embalming, not kept in peoper refridgeration and not injuected with the proper fluids to prevent what has happened. This is horrible for the family and a herrific injustice. Just not if the blame should souly go to Dents. There should never have been a viewing. The body should have been placed in a body bad, injected with a special fluid, put in a plastic jumpsuit, never should have been in a regular casket but in a sealed casket. There were a lot of mis-steps but the blame goes to both funeral homes.

My prayers are with the family. This doesn't make any sense. How could the mortician let the body be that bad. That's so sad to see your love one like that for the last time. Oh my God..they need to close them. Its no telling they probably do alot more people like this that dont have concerned family members. Thats beyond sad. Shame on you, Dents.

to the Gowdy family my heart and prays goes out to you all but don't forget to put God first in your time of need we all know your mad about what was done to your beloved i feel it was just a mistake on there action all the way round but we all make them but some of use cover them up dent's to you guy i eel you all shoulg give all there money back you all sat down and pray together asking God to make both sides strong the devil is always busy

Mr. Gowdy was & will still be a great man to all who knew him. He helped raise all the children in the neighbohood, including his own. After finding out the injustice given to him, I find DENT'S Mortuary COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT! If you ever met Mr. Gowdy you would know PaPa did not deserve this. To the GOWDY family, May GOD keep you & Heaven smile upon you always. I am truly PROUD to have known such a wonderful person as this growing up in the Gracewood community. He will be missed, and forever loved in the highest regard. In reference to the May's & Dent's Mortuary, you should both be held accountable for the mishandling. Neither company informed the Next of Kin of any unsettling issues that arised. Have you no remorse? In addition, for Dent's to offer a mere $300 to compensate for their level of competence is such a travesty. They seem to add insult to injury. But remember, the Righteous will always prevail. Down With Dents!

this was a horrible experience, the odor was out of control and the flies was even worst, Dent's doors should be "SHUT DOWN" for good, even there on workers couldnt stand around because of the odor this was a sad day for the family and a sad way for him to be remembered

This is a very terrible thing that Dent's did to this family. I have been around this family since i was a little girl and i know that they are really in pain right now and Dent's should pay for all of the damage and hurt that they put on the them. There should be no hesitation to shut the junk down. How can you do anybody like this? I never knew alot about this place but now i know that it needs to be shut down, FOREVER!

Posted by: Mary Wilson Location: Washington DC on Oct 7, 2008 at 05:43 PM
I feel for this family. There's this old saying "where there is smike there is fire!" A while back when this company was having public issues, that was enough for me to hit the pause buttom and hit reset. I had an experience with Dents several years ago and I would hope the State and Local Official step in and do what is expected...shut the business down for good!!

Posted by: tequila (granddaughter) on Oct 7, 2008 at 02:34 PM
This was soooooooooooo terrible!!! I hope they shut DENTS down!!!!! Until justice is served!!!

Posted by: Bill Location: Augusta on Oct 7, 2008 at 01:52 PM
You can do a google seach on Dent's and find where they were just shut down in July for failing to pay taxes. They had to pay over $100,000 dollars before they could re-open...obviously, they are trying to cut some corners somewhere, this is the wrong way to do it.

Posted by: Kahnisa (granddaughter on Oct 7, 2008 at 11:04 AM
No respect at all was shown to the Gowdy family. This is a shame and it makes you realize how careless people can be.

Posted by: Len Location: Duncan, SC on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Dent's funeral home buried my mother, father, grandparents, and a host of others over the 40 years I can remember. My family has always been pleased with Dent's care and kindness. Unfortunately, no business is w/out its share of flaws/mistakes. Burials are such an emotional time that it tends to shine a brighter light when a funeral home errors. My prayers are with the Gowdy family and I trust Dent's will do the right thing in their corrective action efforts to comfort the family.

Posted by: SONIA Location: AUGUSTA on Oct 7, 2008 at 08:09 AM
THIS STORY IS REALLY SAD. I KNOW MR GRIFFIN THE FUNERAL HOMES DIRECTOR AND IT DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT. HE IS A CARE PERSON AND A CHRISTIAN THIS STORY REALLY MAKES YOU WONDER.I WONDER SHOULD THE BODY HAD BEEN TAKEN CARE OF THE HOURS IT STAYED AT MAYS OR WHAT. I JUST KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE W/A DEATH OF A MOTHER THAT I WAS TOLD IT IS PROPPER TO TAKE CARE OF ALL FLUIDS BEFORE THE BODY IS FROZEN BEFORE THE FUNERAL. I DON'T KNOW BUT THIS IS TOTALLY SHOCKING. I WOULDN'T TAKE MY LOVE ONE TO DENTS FOR SURE.

Posted by: CHARLIE GIBSON Location: 3000 Mike Padgett Hwy on Oct 7, 2008 at 07:46 AM
It is obvious to the public that Dents showed no respect at all to the Gowdy family. In my opinion the Gowdy family should not have to pay Dent's a penny for their total neglect. body is

This story about Dent's is unbelievable! What a disservice and dishonor to the family and friends of Mr. Gowdy. I am appauled. Den't should be made to reimburse the family the full amount. And then some!
