AUGUSTA, Ga. --- Unlivable conditions at a south Augusta apartment complex has prompted city officials to step in.

According to the city building inspectors, and the property management there's mold, faulty wiring and holes in the walls at the Hi-Port Regency Apartments. The apartments are actually condemned.

Boarded up windows, rusty heat pumps, puddy to sturdy a balcony are all visible to the eye. Worse of all is the dried mold. It is the reason the Augusta city building code inspectors were called out to the property today.

"I've made contact with our license and inspection departments, our code enforcement department and our building inspection department," says Commissioner Calvin Holland. He says that he has gotten calls and emails about the property and believes that no one should be living in such conditions. "Some of the apartments have not been worked on and have not been taken care of like they should have been and so we're very much concerned about that."

There are over a hundred apartments in 14 buildings with the capacity to hold about 114 tenants. Right now there's only 26 tenants left.

News 12 tried to contact the property owner of Hi-Port Regency Apartments, Mr. James Chinn in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We were unable to reach him for comment. However, News 12 spoke with Robin Scott, General Property manager by phone who had this to say:

--We (property management) are working with the city of Augusta to get the apartments up to code.
--We know that several of the units are uninhabitable.
--We know that there is some mold in the units and hired a specialist( Metropolitan Laboratories Environmental Services) to bring the units up to code requirements.

Message to Residents from General Property Manager Robin Scott:

"If you want to move, we are not holding anyone to their lease. We are commited to completing the project. - We've spent over 800,000 dollars already. The property should be finished in 6 to 8 months."

--Robin Scott, General Manager for Ownership Entity

It's about time these apartments got condemned. Our house backs up to this awful mess and there has been a large trash pile at the back of our fence for months. They should be torn down and the land cleared and made sanitary. This has needed to be done for along time. Thanks Commissioner Calvin Holland!!

I USED TO LIVE HERE NOT MORE THAN 6 MONTHS AGO AND TRUST ME IT WAS WORST. THE PLUMBING WAS HORRIBLE, IT WAS INFESTED WITH ANTS AND TERMITES. I WAS ACTUALLY EVICTED BECAUSE I REFUSED TO PAY ANY RENT BECAUSE THEY WOULDNT FIX ANYTHING AROUND MY APARTMENT. OTHER TENANTS WAS ALSO DOING THE SAME BUT I WAS FORCED TO LEAVE (AMONG OTHERS) AND THE COMPLEX WENT 4 MONTHS WITHOUT A OFFICE MANAGER SO WE DIDNT PAY RENT BUT I HOPE THE 26 OTHER TENANTS FIND SOMEWHERE BETTER TO LIVE.

Hi, I hope that this company is telling the truth about hiring this Environmental group to come. Even if they did these tenants really need a bias person in the mix too. This way they know that they are not being lied to anymore. I hope someone can help me get someone to test the air for the tenants not just the company being looked into. Who knows who this company might pay off. I told you when I came forward this company would say anything to make this OK. Who can just afford to move with the economy the way it is. But people like this man who has became a millionaire by ripping people off and treating them like this would advise this because he has no concerns or morals for the people who have stuck through everything. These devoted tenants still get spit on. They would rather have people move than to help them and do what is expected of an apartment complex. I really hope nobody eases up on them. We must keep all eyes on them. Thanks for your help, Alice Romero
