Augusta shooting leaves 1 dead

One man is dead and another person is in custody in a shooting Thursday morning, June 1, in Augusta.

The shooting happened sometime around 5:30 am in the 1400 block of Florence Street between Laney Walker and Wrightsboro Road.

31-year-old Antonio McDaniels of Augusta was found lying between two trash cans on Florence Street. He suffered gunshot wounds to the head and chest. McDaniels was transported to MCG with shock trauma and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officers now have a person of interest in custody. They also received a tip late Thursday afternoon that led them to the murder weapon, a 9mm handgun. At this time, police are not releasing the name of the suspect.

Investigators say it appears that the victim was in the area participating in a drug transaction. They say it appears he was the buyer, and the shooting may have occurred due to an altercation over the transaction.

Families in the neighborhood woke up to gunshots and a man down on the sidewalk.

Tanya Crenshaw's mom lives on Florence Street.

"That know...that's not normal, and it makes me nervous because it's right in front of my mom's house," she said.

The Homicide Task Force found the man shot twice, in the head and body. Officers talked with the people who live here. Ozela Johnson says none of her neighbors know the man.

"It could have been someone just passing through," she said. "I don't know."

She was on her way to work when she saw the police tape and a group of investigators crowded around the trash can where emergency responders found McDaniels still alive early in the morning.

"The subject was transported to MCG with shock trauma, and he was pronounced deceased a short time later," said investigator Paul Godden. He says his team spent hours at the crime scene trying to piece together what happened.

Tanya Crenshaw spent the morning checking on her mom.

"I...just want to make sure she's okay."

For Tanya and all the people who live on Florence Street, it's been a scary day.
