AUGUSTA -- For the second time this week, News 12 breaks the story of an Augusta business shutting its doors and laying off employees. And now customers of Ashley Furniture waiting on thousands of dollars of orders are wondering if they'll ever get them.

The Ashley Store at Augusta Exchange and the Ashley Outlet Store on Windsor Spring are both closed. And many walked away shocked and stunned when they saw the store was closed.

Ashley Furniture has been a fixture in the Augusta Exchange for years. But now it may be no more.
The doors are locked, the lights are out and customers are angry.

"We don't know what we're gonna do now. Are we gonna get our furniture or what?" Diane Parrish told us.

We spotted several people stopping by to shop or pick something up, only to walk away frustrated. They only found a notice with a brief explanation and a phone number to call for assistance.

"It says it's going through an ownership transfer." one person said.

It literally happened overnight. Several former employees told 12 On Your Side they were all laid off Wednesday night and the store was closed Thursday. They say they're hoping if new owners come in, they'll get their jobs back.

"Chest of drawers, nightstand, a sectional couch and a chaise lounge." That's what Brandy Hyatt says she hasn't received yet.

Brandy and her husband Chad have been waiting on their nearly $3,000 worth of furniture for months already and now they don't know if they'll ever see it.

"It's been 8 weeks and we still haven't gotten it yet." she told us.

It's the same story at the Ashley Furniture Outlet. We came to check it out and when we arrived, the doors were locked there too.

We also found found another Ashley Store that closed in Virginia today. From what 12 On Your Side has found, these Ashley stores are all owned by the same franchise owner who is selling them.
But when that will happen, no one really knows.

Ashley's Corporate office says it will attempt to fill any deliveries it can. The number posted on the doors for you to call with question is 866 307 3038.

I purchased furniture in Knoxville on 10/14 and never received it after 6 weeks. It was promised in 4. I asked for a refund and it's been since 11/23 and still no refund. The employees at the store are clueless and only one has tried to help me which I'm really not sure I belive her. They mailed my refund check to the wrong address and have reissued another one they said. The store made our local news on December 22nd and since then they are not ansering their phone. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT WE CAN ALL DO TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT??

You know what Baker Group Internation, this is exactly what you deserve. Do unto others what you want done to you. When you mess with God's real angels...this is what happens. All we can do is pray for your hearts to change on the attitudes of hard working individuals. It should never be about "YOU". It should be about your employees. You have received just what you have dished out. I have tasted sweet suceess thanks to Baker Group International. So long as you hold no compassion to others, GOD knows how to repay you. Good Luck.

We bought furniture at the outlet store and have made all the calls. Can not get any help. Can someone please give us some direction? The furniture sits in the outlet store with a sold tag on it with our name. What do we do,now?...

Posted by: Compass Manager Location: Lexington Sc on Oct 19, 2008 at 08:35 PM
I find it all funny that Paul Rizzuto the owner of compass furniture ran Baker Group......Its all fishy to me. I would not buy anything from Compass stores Ie: Charleston Knoxville or Johnston City. You will wait months for your furniture......

Posted by: anonymous Location: lexington, Sc. on Oct 18, 2008 at 09:02 AM
To the idiot who wrote in about Compass leaving the Bakers holding the bag and having to do the clean up. You are sadly mistaken. Before you begin commenting about situations that you are not involved, get your facts straight! Baker knew what was going on and Compass did everything they could to save the company and all that it has accomplished.

I got my living room furniture on wednesday. Thay were missing one recliner but told me that I should be getting another call for delivery..

Posted by: anonymous Location: august on Oct 17, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Has anybody received their furniture yet?

Posted by: anonymous Location: anonymous on Oct 16, 2008 at 12:48 PM
Oh be so very careful what you choose to believe.Always know you never get 2 sides of any story.Compass told us over and over again all would be fine and deal was going thru, tell customers furniture is on it's way. They are the liars. That guy in charge counted his chickens before they hatched. He was counting on something-changing over employees and all-before any thing really got finalized for sure. He and Compass created the mess, then left it for the Baker's to clean up.The Baker's knew about the closing of the stores when the employee's did....the day it happened. It was completely out of there control.Compass came in and acted like they were the new owners, paying bills, spending money, making decisions- going on as if the business was all theres. But it did not end up that way and the Baker's-whose name is on everything--was left holding the bag and all the blame.

I got a check from Ashley Furniture but have yet to cash it. Has anyone received a check or their furniture yet?

Wanting my money back, I went to Mike's Furniture store last Friday, my furniture was delivered on Saturday on week later. I'm so happy. I also save about 400.00.... Go to Mike's Furniture.....

Posted by: Wanting my money back Location: Aiken on Oct 2, 2008 at 06:22 PM
Thanks for the financial info. That does help! In your opinion as a former manager, is Ashley furniture worth me going to Mike's Furniture for? Would I have problems getting it delivered from there?

Posted by: former manager Location: USA on Oct 2, 2008 at 01:31 PM
BGI was not supposed to charge your account for any financing until you recieved the merchandise. The store can "authorize" the amount(which is the slip you signed at checkout) but is not techincally allowed to charge your account until you are delivered. BGI always charged the account a week or so before the furniture was delivered. You need to contact Wells Fargo/American General/Citifinancial and let them know that you understand that. Here is the link to the Wells Fargo website. There should be any contact number you need on it. http://financial.wellsfargo.com/index.html Hope this helps.

I actually saw the Ashley Furniture truck in the area. It was spotted on Belair Rd in Evans..Looks like we might still get our furniture!

Posted by: Liars Location: lCompass Furniture Group on Oct 1, 2008 at 10:43 PM
How about the employees who switched to a new company from baker group to compass and have been told there job stability was ok till they show up for work and are told they cant work and that they are laid off.......Compass Furniture Group has just as much blame as Baker group.......Look at it this was way, the man who helped run all corry bakers stores is now the man running compass furniture group

Please tell me how to contact Wells Fargo about cancelling my Ashley acount. I can't find a number for them, nor have I gotten my money back from Ashley.

Posted by: former manager Location: USA on Oct 1, 2008 at 04:09 PM
I am not shocked that BGI went out of business! Money problems for month? Yeah right.. try years. They have had money problems since they expanded out of Augusta. He got greedy and when he saw that it wasn't going to work, he planned a way to go out and take everyone's money with him. I garauntee Corey Baker is THE RICHEST owner operator ever! Think of it this way, if Ashley has not been paid on the furntire, and the customers dont have the furniture, then what happened to the money? I know what kind of revenue a store like that can pull. I also know what it costs to maintain the whole operation. It just doesn't add up? So as any individual with half a brain knows where the money is.. or at least has a good idea. BGI lost it's quality managers/employees long ago due to its hipocracy. I have a hard time defending the managers that stayed, because they know a lot more than they let on! Trust me I have been in those shoes and I know. Employees may not have known but manager!?

Posted by: former manager Location: United States on Oct 1, 2008 at 03:55 PM
am a former manager of the store in Harbison. I managed 2 of their stores including the Harbison location and the Knoxville, TN location. I hated every minute of it! I will say I have never seen a bigger bunch of hipocrits in my life!!! They preached god and took advantage of it by playing on the heartstrings of the community. Baker and his bully senior management staff lie to their customers, employees, and frankly to themselves. My wife spotted it from the beginning and said they were full of ****! Unfortunately, I was starry eyed and very optimistic in my first career opportunnity. I eventually had enough of Baker and his goons. I did end up leaving and now work for a MUCH better company. From what I understand the employees of his stores had about as much "heads up" as the customers did. I can only wonder how he sleeps at night! I will say this, Cory Baker is a liar. He preaches integrity and has none. He told us all god wanted him to open on Sundays!? He is a piece of garbage

I finally received my refund check for $2509 just to have it returned for insufficient funds. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how was resolved?

So after getting a call last week and confirming delivery for this Wednesday. I get a call this morning saying we are sorry we can not deliver to you on Wednesday. We are sorry the furniture is B/O. We will call you once we have your furniture in stock....I asked to speak to a manager and the manager said what do you want me to do. We are doing are job and when you get your furniture you get your furniture..I guess from corporate to baker, the trickle affect really does happen.

Posted by: Customer Location: Georgia on Sep 29, 2008 at 09:09 AM
I got a call Saturday and they scheduled delivery of my furniture for Oct. 18. We'll see if it all comes in.

to the folks who think this is unimportant and shouldn't be in the news-i'll remember that when i read about your obituary in the paper. who gives a crap. Maybe if you had a job and got your head out of your butt you would understand why us hard working tax payers (prob. footing your way through life) are upset that we have lost money.

We financed $4800 w/American General (through Ashley's) and of course we haven't rec'd our furniture either. I called Amer.GEn.cancelled the contract and went to Mikes furniture on Bobby-Jones.Ordered the same ashley furniture cheaper. They will del'v in two weeks and you get a $200 gas card if you spend $1900 or more.

Posted by: joel Location: columbia, sc on Sep 26, 2008 at 08:35 PM
All 3 locations in the columbia area are also closed. we went to pay on our furniture and to look for an additional piece for our living room, and the doors are all locked and the stores are dark.

Is there a class-action suit ongoing? If so, I want in on it too. I purchased some furniture (stupidly paid cash), waited 8 weeks and then cancelled it because they still couldn't tell me when it was going to be delivered. The so-called Corporate Office was to issue me a refund for $1300 in 7-10 days and that was 3 months ago. I also spoke to Cheryl who said she contacted the Corporate Office and somehow they didn't have my paperwork. She said she would resend it (and I followed up to make sure she did) and I would get my refund in a week. Well, that was nearly a month ago. I'm sure the entire thing was a scam and she Corporate DID receive my refund paperwork the first time, just opted not to pay it. I do not like being lied to. I'm sure if I hadn't paid them in 6 months, they'd be after me for the money too!

I bought 2 pieces of furniture at the outlet store ($1100), didn't have my truck the day i paid for them. was told i could pick them up within the week. closed 1-2 days later. The outlet store carries damaged/discontinued pieces at lower prices. you pay for them and take them home. no orders. but many of the pieces are still in great condition. called cooperate but i can't be helped since my purchase was in the outlet store. They told me i may not ever get a refund or the furniture. Have called everywhere trying to find out who can unlock the door, who now owns the company, what is going on so i can get my stuff. legally the 2 pieces are mine, they have my name on them and i have a reciept. they are just stuck behind locked doors. anyone know what i can do or who can help me??

Posted by: Customer Location: Georgia on Sep 26, 2008 at 08:39 AM
I got an automated call from Ashley's on Thursday 9/25 saying that they would be calling within the next 10 days to schedule delivery of my furniture.

Posted by: Heather Location: Augusta on Sep 25, 2008 at 06:10 PM
We recieved a call today. They told us our furniture would be here on October 15th..I hope everyone else is getting called..

I finally got a letter from Ashley, but it basically says the same thing the letter on the doors of the store do.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: augusta on Sep 25, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Go to Mike's Furniture or somewhere else that sells Ashley furniture...if you still want it you are sure to find it at a better price than you were going to pay Ashley's. I'm saving $325 on a livingroom set.

Sue, they were very nice. They didn't give me a hard time. I just explained what was going on. I also requested that they send me something in writing stating that.

Posted by: Heather Location: Augusta on Sep 24, 2008 at 01:39 PM
I just got off the phone with Ashley corporate office and he told me that they should be giving us a call within the next several days. They are trying to collect all of our furniture right now. He also said it probably would be mid october before we get our furniture. I asked him about getting my money back. He pretty much told me that the guy that had owned the store was filing bankruptcy and I would be better off just waiting on the furniture. I am really pissed!

Posted by: Ellen Location: Evans on Sep 24, 2008 at 10:14 AM
The paperwork I we have from the purchase of our furniture does not specify who the finance company we financed through is. I have called American General, the phone numbers on the door of the store, and wells fargo. does anyone know if there are other finance companies that the Ashley store was working through?

Posted by: Sue Location: augusta on Sep 24, 2008 at 09:49 AM
Upset in Graniteville, did the finance company make it difficult for you to cancel your contract?

Posted by: Customer Location: Georgia on Sep 24, 2008 at 09:15 AM
I have called Montage, the insurance company, to request a refund and they said that the store, not them, should refund the money. I told them the store was bankrupt and I didn't want insurance on something I never got. She basically said so what. The supervisor, Kim, refused to talk to me. I spoke with Tina, she just answers phones. I'm in on the class action suit, and I think Montage should be included if they refuse to refund premiums paid for something we never got.

Posted by: Heather Location: Augusta on Sep 23, 2008 at 09:41 PM
I have also been waiting for furniture. It has been ten weeks now. The salesman that sold me the furniture told me that it would only be four weeks. I am pissed! We also paid in full $2500.00. They should not have continued selling furniture when they knew that we would not be getting it. I wish that I would have gotten my money back. I did speak with someone over the phone after the store was closed. I called several different locations trying to get a number to call and finally did get through to someone. She told me that they would be getting all of the Augusta furniture out to us no later than two weeks and that I will be getting a call. I am not getting my hopes up.

Posted by: Upset Location: Graniteville on Sep 23, 2008 at 07:16 PM
Sue, I just called my creditcard company and I disputed the charges. I also call the Wells Fargo Company and canceled the contract that I had with them. So I'm going to go and purchase me some furniture from another store.

Posted by: Sue Location: augusta on Sep 23, 2008 at 05:22 PM
If we do receive our furniture, will the warranty we paid for fabric/scratch protection be any good? should the store get the delivery charge i paid the baker group store? i'm asking b/c i charged these items on my credit card and would like to know if i should dispute these charges.

Posted by: Bob Location: Augusta on Sep 23, 2008 at 12:23 PM
I understand that the employees are very upset and not to blame. But my question is: When we called the manager of the store to check on the order, did that manager have access to the order history and was able to check the status of the order? When I called the home office there is an option available for stores to check on availability (not available to customers). Did that not look suspicious to him or her that no order had been placed to the corporate office? That should have been a red flag.

Posted by: Ilka Location: Evans on Sep 23, 2008 at 12:18 PM
We are military. We returned to the states after 3 years of Germany, and my husband being downrange in Iraq. We pinched and saved to buy a home here and new furniture. We bought $3000.00 worth of living room furniture on 30 July (paid by check). Still waiting for delivery or my money back. Meanwhile, we are sitting on the floor. I got a letter from Ashley industries today in the mail saying they would be in contact regarding a POSSIBLE delivery. I tried to call the 1-866-289-6853 number, it cycles through the hold pattern twice and then disconnects due to technical problems. I have contacted the governors office for consumer affairs 1-800-869-1123 and the BBB. I have also contacted a local attorney about a class action lawsuit. The attorney website is: www.bellbrigham.com If they don't deliver on their end of the bargain, maybe together, we can do something. Good luck everyone!

Posted by: Sue Location: Augusta on Sep 23, 2008 at 11:03 AM

The BBB is, in fact, compiling a case for the OCA (Office of Consumer Affairs) for the U. S. Gov't. Call 706-210-7676 to add your case to the file. You will also have to e-mail a written complaint to gaiello@csra.bbb.org I spoke with Gigi yesterday at the BBB about this. I also have a call in to the supervisor at Montage that sold the warranty insurance. You can call them at 800-686-5559. I don't need a warranty on something I never got. I told them I expect a full refund. I'm looking at 8K here, I'm willing to hire a lawyer.

Posted by: Mark Location: N. Augusta on Sep 23, 2008 at 08:18 AM
Just a reminder to those of you that paid with a credit card, most card companies only allow 60 days from the date of your statement showing the purchase to file a dispute - WHICH MUST BE DONE IN WRITING. After all the lies my wife and I have been told over the last 3 months I will be disputing mine today. Don't wait on the probable false hope of getting your furniture, this may be your only chance to get your money back.

What are the 4 stores Compass has purchased? Sounds to me Corey Baker cant keep track of money as i see he once had rental car business that fell through as well?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Anonymous on Sep 22, 2008 at 05:32 PM
To the other question, Compass is a new company which is owned by Corey Baker's former financial partners. The company is being operated by the former COO of Baker Group International. Keep in mind, these are good folks that have had major issues with Corey Baker's financial problems for much longer than we have. Compass has purchased 4 Ashley stores from BGI and was undergoing negotiations to purchase the remaining stores. The doors had to be closed, due to Corey Baker's inability (lack of interest, or whatever you want to call it) to facilitate the negotiations between Compass and the lien-holders that BGI owes the money to. Ashley Furniture is a brand-name and a manufacturer. They will cover the expense of getting the furniture orders filled, but will not be the ones to actually get it to the customers. I would assume that Ashley (corporate) and Compass have made arrangements and are working together to clean up BGI's mess as best as they can.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Anonymous on Sep 22, 2008 at 05:20 PM
First, let me answer the latter question. Obviously, nobody at the store level expected things to happen this way. That includes managers, sales staff, and customer service. We were all led to believe that the buyout was going well. We were all told and believed that it was in the best interest of our customers AND our company to keep things going. We had confidence that ownership would change hands smoothly, our customers would be delivered, and things would be better with the new company. I am ashamed to say that we were like a flock of sheep, following in the direction of the same people we trusted to lead us. Why would we do anything different, though. Nobody ever came out and told us to lie to our customers. From our point of view we were simply giving the answers we believed in ourselves, which was "the furniture will be here and ready to deliver any day now." When customers became upset, they were referred to management who were told to give them Ashley gift cards.

Posted by: Journalist Location: ga on Sep 22, 2008 at 03:57 PM
Why would anyone go to th 365 perry st address. There is nothing left there. It shows a for sale sign...The local police department has a address for Corey Baker as Legends Drive Chateau Elan Braselton Ga...Also how does compass play in this role with delivering the furniture..Who is Compass???....I thought Ashley Corporate has taken over and is delivering the furniture.....Also are you saying the managers and sales associates were instructed to lie to customers....

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Anonymous on Sep 22, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Also, it is futile to file complaints with the BBB, at this point. The BBB is designed to hold merchants accountable for doing good business. These store are closed and are no longer doing any business. The next owner will simply (and rightfully so) claim that they have no involvement in any prior issues. Baker Group International is who has everyone's money AND is responsible for the current issues with the delivery of the furniture. Honestly, if you want to make something happen, you need to turn this into a bigger news story. Organize a protest outside the BGI corporate offices. They are located at 365 S Perry St Lawrenceville, GA , 30045-4838 Phone: 678-376-9913. Dont bother calling the number as nobody will answer. If I had Corey Baker's cell number, I would give it to you. Although I'm sure he's changed it by now.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Anonymous on Sep 22, 2008 at 03:13 PM
To the last 2 posts, 1. It's hard for me to say that Cheryl is the bad guy, here. I know that she was given instructions on how to handle non-delivery issues, just as all of the managers were. The difference is that some disagreed with the orders they were given and resigned (this actually happened). I know that Cheryl is a good person and is currently without a job like the rest of us. I cannot speak for Cheryl on the decisions she made, but I know for a fact that managers were all given very specific instructions and Ashley gift cards were being given out to everyone waiting on their orders. Some quit and some followed orders to keep their jobs. 2. Remember, the Tennessee and Charleston stores were successfully aquired by Compass and are not owned by BGI.

Why is this so common amongst Ashley franchises to go under and not be able to pay back creditors. How does baker group still have 3 stores open in Tennessee and Charleston

Posted by: Customer Location: Georgia on Sep 22, 2008 at 02:01 PM
At least I finally know what is going on. I ordered 8K worth of furniture (moved into a new house) on April 26 and have been given the run around by CHERYL at the Augusta store about why the furniture isn't in. She kept saying two more weeks. She offered to give me a $200 credit to my account twice, but never followed through and did it. I noticed on my statement again this month that the credit wasn't there and called about that to find out the store had closed and was filing bankruptcy. She told me it was a "merger." I think CHERYL should be called out on her lies to customers and allowing this to go on when she knew what was happening. Luckily, if you financed the furniture instead of paying cash (I would never pay cash for something until I received it) you can file a dispute for merchandise not received with the finance company. I did that today. Let's all file with the Beter Business Bureau, too.

next two weeks) that will be delivered out to the customers by none other than the Compass group. DO NOT take your anger out on the people who are trying to get your orders to you. The people who are working on this are the only ones left who care that you get what you have purchased. Lastly, remember in the future never to pay any money for an order without reading over the refund policies or securing a FIRM delivery date.

owner of these stores would be to allow a minimum of several months to separate from previous ownership. This will allow them to open back up and say "We are under new management." It goes without saying that anyone coming back into these stores will have challenges gaining the trust and patronage of the consumers and general public. To former Ashley (Baker Group) employees, I would suggest to move on. We are all bitter about what has happened, but remember that Compass are the "good guys." They have done thier best to take care of us, but we will not see any positive outcome within the near future. To Ashley customers, there is a positive outcome in sight. Ashley (the actual corporation and manufacturer) has what they call a "Good Samaritan" fund in place for situations like this. Being that many customers have not been delivered, they will be the ones to cover the expense of getting this furniture to the customers. There is supposedly several trucks on the way (within the

However, The Baker Group has actually taken out loans on the bulk of the assets (showroom furniture and the actual property). It has been Compass' intention to settle these debts and obtain ownership of the remaining locations (Augusta, Roanoke, Columbia, and Irmo). This is to the degree that, in good faith, Compass has been managing and operating these locations at thier own expense. This is the sole reason that these stores have stayed open this long. Unfortunately, Compass has reached a standoff with The Baker Group and it's creditors. From a business standpoint, the expense of operating a large business is too much when the road to obtaining ownership is barracaded with negotiations. We would all like to see things move in a positive direction, but at this point, it is unlikely to happen quickly. The best thing for any new

Amanda. Very well put......The only contact we got for this man is disconnected. Some of us however found information pertaining to CHATEAU ELAN, Braselton Georgia and are seeking those locations. However because of security we can not get to his Estate. Sounds to me like he embezzled the money.

I have somewhat had a front-row seat to this whole ordeal and would like to shed some light to all who have interest in this ordeal. The Baker Group is responsible for the mismanagement leading to the closure of the stores. The Baker Group has been in noticable financial trouble for several months. This has been to the degree that Ashley (the manufacturer) would not deliver any product to the stores without COD payment. It is never a good sign when a company this large cannot maintain a satisfactory credit standing with it's biggest supplier. This is especially discouraging, considering the fact that the Ashley logo is on the front of the stores. The plot thickens from here. Corey Baker's financial partners have separated and formed a company called Compass. The face of Compass' organization is made up of several former officers and management from The Baker Group, including the COO. These are the good guys. Compass has been under negotiations to buy the stores and settle the

What everyone needs to understand is that Corey Baker and Baker Group Intl. is responsible for the closing of the stores in GA, VA, and SC. We employees are all out of jobs and not because of Ashley but because of the Bakers mismanagement of the stores. They are over $5 million dollars in debt. They didn't pay their bills. In fact there is a lien on all the furniture in the stores. Ashley is willing to give these customers their furniture but they don't owe them any money. Corey Baker in Atlanta spent all their money and emptied the accounts. He owes them the refunds. I am upset and outraged that all media attention is focusing on Ashley and not Corey Baker. Why don't you sit outside his house and wait for a comment. He is afterall responsible for putting a 100 or more people out of work and for basically stealing these customers money. Don't cut your nose off to spite your face. Take the furniture because you probably wont see a dime in refunds until there is a lawsuit.

The 800 number that is posted will not assist you in any way. The individual that answers the phone will not take your name nor number and states they don't have to contact the customer referance their order. The process the attendant stated, "This will take some time and to please bear with us." We have already waited 8 weeks and our funds have cleared our account. No furniture.. No calls.. No help.. It may be legal, but not professional. What is wrong with this company?

Mike's isn't the only one that can order directly from Ashley Furniture and recieve furniture in the same timely fashion. I ordered a couch from Grovetown after waiting 3 months from Ashley and they had it in 5 days! And it was cheaper, too bad I'll probably never see my $600 back from Ashley, since I already have my furniture.

The two Ashley stores in Columbia are owned by the same one in Augusta, and they too are closed. I cant believe the one at Village at Sandhills closed.

Customers who have been ripped off i am writing with further info in regards to the ASHLEY story i have called two Ashley Homestore locations that still have the Corey Baker Group as their Greeting for voice mail i have called all the closed stores and they have no voice mail greeting make of that what you will it is also interesting to note that this type of incicdent has happened several times where a store closes and ASHLEY comes out stating that they bear no responsiblility as they had given the group the license to use the trademark and buisness name but the licensee was a seperate company although business failures are not uncommon but the exact mo occurs one day the store is open the next day closed with the same press release instead of the store having a going out of buisnes sale it just closes virtually overnight. P.S. Here are the numbers and addresses for the stores with the Baker Group still being identified on the voice mail answering service. 1(865)392-5401 110

What we as Ashley employees did by still selling furniture even though it was changing ownership was NOT illegal. Is is illegal for a franchise like McDonalds to stop selling burgers because they are changing ownership? Nope! We conducted business as normal because that is what we were instructed to do, your furniture is ordered the same day it is purchased. How will corporate get those orders? Because that is who we order the furniture from. I understand that people are out of money but you WILL get your furniture, we won't get out jobs back. We can only tell you what we know. How do you think that we feel after we were told that we were changing ownership and now we are all out of jobs? So don't place the blame with us as employees, place the blame with the "owner". Try to find out the facts before you go making assumptions. Thanks ex for taking some of the weight off of us!!

Just called 1-800-477-0097...was told they can not authorize refunds due to company bankruptcy litigations. Will be contacting customers next week to set up deliveries of merchandise...needless to say they were not helpful. I want a refund, so that I can go elsewhere. I am tired of waiting for a couch...3 months is to long!

Tell everyone to go to Mike's Furniture in the Sam's Shopping center, they can order directly from Ashleys distribution center and get things in a couple of weeks. I did and got my sectional in in 5 days. All they will need is the model number of what they ordered from Ashley.

All you customers experiencing problems with the ashley furniture store locations in SC,GA,VA can stop pointing fingers at store employees. We are all out of a job now. Something we weren't told until yesterday. We found out at the same time as you that the stores were closed. Please direct all complaints, rants, and persecutions towards the people responsible. Baker Group International, run and operated by Corey Baker. He was the owner of the particular locations I mention above. I hope you will take this into consideration. It *** for everyone involved. We are not the enemy or Ashley Furniture.

I am also out of money and no furinture...bought June 25th. I guess we all heard the same thing from Cheryl (store manager), it wil be next week or maybe 2 weeks. I also received the gift card that others have spoke about- what good is that, I have no furinture to sit on and no store to use the gift card at. Why didn't the company tell the customers what was going on, it has been almost 3 months of waiting...I want my money back. I don't even want the furniture, what good is a warrenty if there is no business to take care of it?!? I agree with Jennifer below, we should all be filling compliants with BBB. I need my refund to purchase furniture from another store.

Posted by: N Location: Augusta on Sep 19, 2008 at 04:19 PM
I too bought furniture in June and never received it. I was told the same thing in July that is being said now - new owners, truck arriving tomorrow, etc. I told Cheryl, the store manager, that she could either send me a refund or speak to my attorney. I was fortunate enough to receive my refund and purchased the exact same furniture for less money at another store. I repeatedly e-mailed the Ashley website and was finally given a phone number for the corporate office. I didn't have to use it so I'm not sure if it works but the number I have is 800-477-0097. I hope this helps and you are all able to receive your furniture or a refund.

Posted by: Troy Location: Evans on Sep 19, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Sigh. It is sad that this happens. I believe that Ashley should be giving refunds since the store had the "Ashley" name and no where did it tell me that it was a franchise and Ashley corporate would not be responsible. People need to be held responsible for gross neglect and should be imprisoned. This is another example of the wrong in our society. People can run a company into the ground with no consequences. Good luck to all of us that are out money with no furniture.

If what M says is true, then my suspicions have been right on. It is looking more and more like the Augusta Ashley Stores took our money and didn't even order our furniture. If the former Ashely employee who also posted is being tuthful, the Ashley employees have also not been paid in a long time. So what happened to our money? Also, if the Augusta Stores are closed, how will Ashley Coroporate receive those orders? Nobody is in the stores to send them. As a result of these realizations and an inability to speak to anyboyd from Ashley coporate, I took the initiative and filed an official complaint with the Central GA branch of the Better Business Bureau this morning. I have asked them to get me a full refund and suggested pursuing criminal charges against the franchise owner. Here is the link if you want to file your own claims. If they receive enough complaints, then they will have to deal with this quickly. http://centralgeorgia.bbb.org

Posted by: Carrie Location: Augusta on Sep 19, 2008 at 02:39 PM
After 3 hours of being on hold someone answered. He said they had no clue when they would deliver any furniture and he was not authorized to give any refunds. I told him I was not going to wait for an open ended amount of time. He then told me hopefully in 1-2 weeks they would deliver it. Praying we get our furniture. If you listen to the recording as I did for 3 hours it says Ashley does is all that is why their cost is so low. So if they are producing it and delivering it why has mine taken since July and still nothing??? Shame on the owner for taking orders even on the day before they closed! Sounds like fraud to me!

Posted by: M Location: augusta on Sep 19, 2008 at 01:34 PM
I just got off the phone with someone supposedly from Ashley. Called the number listed on this site. They answered within 2 minutes. She (Jenifer) said they had not received the list of orders from the Augusta store. Once they do, they will begin contacting folks about a delivery. She said it should be within the next two weeks. If you do not receive a call, she said to call their scheduling department. According to her all orders will be filled and delivered. We will see.

Posted by: Jennifer Location: Augusta on Sep 19, 2008 at 10:24 AM
So J: If the number is only operating during business hours, can you tell me why I've been on HOLD for 97 MINUTES this morning (so far) and no customer service rep is picking up? All I get is some nasty big band music with a voice over feeding me a line about how great Ashley furniture is and the fact that my call is very important and somebody will be with me shortly. Last time I checked. . .97 mins isn't "shortly".

Posted by: Anthony Location: Augusta on Sep 19, 2008 at 10:08 AM
While the Ashley store is closed, those still wanting Ashley furniture can now get anything from there local retailers. Like the guy said below, you can now get anything from Ashley through Farmers, Mike's, Grovetown Bargain Center, Great Deals, etc... Pretty much all the stores that were carrying Ashley Furniture prior to the home store openning.

Cindy - From now on, maybe the producers and reporters at News 12 could run their scripts by you to make sure they are news worthy.

I'm sick of this,I was transferred to another state and Ashley's furniture told me that they couldn't deliver my furniture to me out of town. I was told on the first that I would receive a refund in 7 to 10 business days haven't received it as of yet. I talk to them to night before they closed and my money has been in the mail for 2 weeks now and I have not yet recieved it! What do I do know? Niether numbers work who do I sue?

Posted by: Jennifer Location: AUGUSTA on Sep 19, 2008 at 08:22 AM
I moved down here from New England to take a job in late July. I ordered a living room set from Ashley, putting the $1600 on my credit card. But nobody said anything about slow shipments or a corporate buy out. I called the day before the store closed. When I threatened to cancel my order the store manager offered me a store gift card as compensation for my patience and she told me that Ashley Coporate was stepping in to make sure deliveries would be made-- starting with the oldest unfilled orders first. But she never told me the store was closing. What good is a store gift card if there will be no store to shop in? Some compnesation. They can keep their gift card. Now I just want my money back-- all of it. I'll go someplace else to get my furniture.

Cindy,People care because they have paid for merchandise that they have not received, You would feel the same way if it had happened to you.And yes it is definitely news. People have lost jobs, money and furniture. If you don't think thats important then something is seriously wrong with your way of thinking

Posted by: Bev Location: Augusta on Sep 19, 2008 at 02:21 AM
Here's why this is important...beside the fact it could be YOUR furniture you're waiting on...it could be the business you work for closing their doors and you loosing you job. It's a fact of this economy. In FL Bennigan's restaurant did the exact same thing acrosse the STATE. Employees had a job one day...the next they didn't. Same thing happened to Steak `n Ale who is owned by the same parent company. There's a reason they call it "news". It's vital informant that CAN and most of the time DOES affect...directly or trickle down. Two businesses closing their doors in this small city...that IS news...especially if more are waiting in the wings to collapse.

As a former employee of Ashley Furniture let me say that in no way shape or form did we deceive anyone. We can't honestly tell you that we were undergoing new ownership in June if we did not know ourselves. We as employees were not told until recently. Everything that was told to every customer was information that was given to us directly from our corporate office. So you can say that we were also lied to. Customers have been waiting for 3 months for furniture and our salespeople have been waiting 3 months for paychecks. I understand the frustration of everyone who has bought furniture, but what you need to know is that you will get your furniture, we won't get our checks!!! Ashley Corporate is taking over all orders and are making sure that they get delivered. And to let everyone know the 866 number that was given is only opened until 5 so its a reason why you can't get through if you are calling now.

Posted by: annonymous Location: augusta on Sep 18, 2008 at 10:24 PM
was anyone able to find anything out when they called the number other than what was said in the report. I just recently purchased furniture this week and I'm not sure if I should just cancel the order or what??? Please help very confused.

I ordered furniture in June. Paid 1000 cash. i have been calling the store since mid july for updates and was told it was in a truck on its way to augusta. I was even told that by a manager yesterday. I certainly think the corporate office could be more helpful in this situation. Even though this franchise is independently owned, it does bear the ashly name.

To the ignorant people who are wondering why this is making NEWS...Ashley's Furniture has ripped (possibly) hundreds of people of in the Augusta area for hundred's of thousands dollars. They could be looking at felony charges. That should be concerning or even alarming to the people in our area. The economy has put a strain on many households in our nation and for a "well-respected" company to come in and take hard earned money from people trying to make a living should face harsh prosecution! This company knew for months that they were in finicial trouble, yet they allowed families to come in, place orders and collect their money without batting an eye! I am one of those people and I am mad as hell! What we need to be concerned about is that Ashley's Furniture will file bankruptcy and we'll NEVER get our money and then the courts will protect them! I contacted the Better Business Bureau (706-210-7676) who informed me that they were investigating the case. They are able to help us!

I order a sofa, dining room table, two chairs. I called several times they kept telling me it would be delivered within two weeks it has been six now.

Posted by: Jackie Location: Hephzibah on Sep 18, 2008 at 07:51 PM
I ordered new tables ($600) six weeks ago. They were suppose to come in today, to be delivered to my house on Sat. Must to my surprise I heard the store was closing on the news. I have spoken with the store 2 to 3 times a week. Like everyone else, I was given several different delivery dates. I would like to know if anyone has any idea when the NEW owners plan to take over. Are they prepared to refund my money? That is the only satisfactory solution I am attempting to gain from yet another company closing. No, the phone number given, has not been any assistance. Especially since no one answers it, it ends with a busy signal. I plan to file a complaint with the better business bureau. I would suggest everyone else should do the same. Maybe one day we will all get our money back. From now on, I will only purchase furniture that can leave the store with me.

I moved to Augusta from Kuwait 2 months ago and bought furniture. My apartment has been empty waiting for the delivery and now they say the store is closing... I am mad!!! I tried calling the number and it just rings..no message or anything then it just goes to a busy signal. Who is going to be held responsible. This is a franchise isn't it? McDonald's are individually owned too... The Franchise itself should hold some if not all of the liability.

Posted by: Ben Location: Hephzibah on Sep 18, 2008 at 05:18 PM
You would think the employees would have some idea about this and would have let customers know before they bought and paid for furniture. I just paid for my furniture on the 16th of september and nothing was even mentioned or said about this.

Posted by: Jen Location: Augusta on Sep 18, 2008 at 02:53 PM
Like some of the folks here, I care a WHOLE lot about this story, as I too, purchased furniture from Ashley in June, paid with check, which has cleared, and have yet to receive my merchandise as promised. Would've been nice if the store would've been honest from the beginning about this, instead of telling you weekly for the past 12 weeks that it will arrive 'next week'.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: GEORGIA on Sep 18, 2008 at 02:29 PM
I wonder if it would be newsworthy to you if you had purchased furniture there with money that was hard earned months ago and had been given the run around ever since and you were sitting here without furniture or money. Since it doesn't affect you then it isn't important right??

Posted by: SUE Location: AUGUSTA on Sep 18, 2008 at 02:06 PM
I think this is news considering we bought a house full of furniture 2 mths ago and have not received it yet.
