Skinner Mill closing bad for business

One family-owned business is feeling the effects of a road that closed right in front of it.

Earlier this week we told you that Skinner Mill Road will be closed for 45 days where it crosses Cranes Creek.

A store located there is now struggling to survive.

There has always been a steady flow of customers at the PJ Food Mart off of Skinner Mill Road, but since construction began literally at the mouth of their driveway, instead of coming in for gas or food, drivers are using the area as a turnaround.

"They turn around...don't even stop in, just completely go around the gas pumps and keep on going," says Faye Nathanson, who works at the Food Mart.

Nathanson says construction is causing the family business to struggle.

Construction has cut off access from one side of the road completely. And from the other side, customers who thought they could cut through the parking lot to get around the construction are forced to turn around.

"We're right in the middle of it," Nathanson says.

To ease the pain, the DOT posted a message to make sure drivers are aware that the store is still open.

But that hasn't been enough.

"It hurt us bad, it really has," says Nathanson.

Construction is expected to wrap up around June 30. In the meantime, the folks at PJ Food Mart hope that drivers don't forget about Skinner Mill Road.

If you need to get around Skinner Mill Road, you should use Boy Scout, Wheeler, and Walton Way Extension.
