Columbia County BOE moves to Evans

Columbia County School Board meetings will soon be a shorter drive for many. The headquarters has moved from Appling to a 60,000 square foot headquarters in Evans.

The new building is on Hereford Farm Road. Construction is finishing up, and the offices are up and running.

"We're real excited about this," says Columbia County school superintendent Tommy Price.

Price took News 12 on a tour of the new facility. He says all the departments are now under one roof: human resources, public safety, and administration.

"For the first time in a long time, there will be better communication, and it will be more efficient," he says.

Public meetings will also take place in the new location.

At last Tuesday's BOE meeting in Appling, there wasn't room for all the attendees.

"Once construction is finished, the board room will hold about 250 people," Price says. "The old only held about 75.

"It will be more accessible for those who want to attend."

Superintendent Price says the new location is closer for many parents and will make school visits easier for the board, as most schools are close to the Evans area.

"It's going to get a lot of use," Price says. "We're looking forward to it."

The board expects to start public meetings in June.

All the construction should wrap up in a few months.
