Free wireless Internet at Augusta Common

Starting Monday, May 8, you can log onto your wireless Internet from more than just the coffee shop.

You can surf the net from part of downtown Augusta.

All you have to do is take your wireless device to the Augusta Common, and you're on.

The wireless broadband is free and available to anyone.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver made the announcement Monday afternoon. He brought a few laptops out to show everyone how it's done.

The mayor says the $100 a month this costs taxpayers is a planned part of the budget, and the new service will help the downtown economy.

"It will spur the economic development downtown and encourage young entrepreneurs," Copenhaver said. "This is a great day for the city."

Copenhaver hopes to get money from the governor's office to make Augusta one of three Georgia cities to go completely wireless. He expects a decision by August.
