BAMBERG COUNTY, S.C.---The Denmark police chief is calling it a possible homicide, but neighbors are calling it murder. A man was shot to death at Myers Corner Store on Voorhees Road.

Police Chief Leroy Grimes says someone called for an ambulance to the corner store around 3 p.m. Thursday.

When EMS got there they thought the man had suffered from low blood sugar or a heart attack.

But then they took him to the hospital, where they discovered a gunshot wound. The chief says he died somewhere in that time-frame.

Grimes also says this is highly unusual for Denmark because they usually see one murder in the city every one or two years.

Neighbors tell me the victim is the owner of Myers Corner Store. They believe someone was robbing the store, although he mostly just sold penny-candy and a few items.

One neighbor says the man was well-known around town and she remembers buying candy from him since she was a little girl.

"He was very nice, [he'd] greet you when you came in the store, greet you when you leave. That's the kind of person he was," said Tracy Washington. "It wasn't worth it. It didn't have to go this far. It really didn't."

The police chief says SLED is now investigating, but he does not know of any witnesses at this time.

They also do not have any suspects right now, and in fact do not even know how many people may have been involved.

Now they're looking for answers, hoping to find out what exactly happened at this corner store.
