AUGUSTA, Ga. --- A Jefferson County mother says she's not keeping quiet about a controversial book read in class by a middle school teacher.
Cynthia Betancourt says the book in question is not part of any reading list, but a personal book belonging to a teacher. Betancourt says some of the passages read were inappropriate for an 8th grade class and says she won't stop until this teacher is no longer teaching.
The book allegedly read by a male teachers at Wrens Middle School is called "Be Afraid, Very Afraid." The book is filled with urban legends. Skimming through the book, there are a number of sexual references. Betancourt's daughter is a student in the teacher's class.
Betancourt says the book is unsuitable for Eighth graders and risque even for adults. She has even started a petition to remove the unnamed teacher from the classroom completely.
We contacted the School Superintendent in Jefferson County to get their side of the story but they did not return calls to News 12.
