A neighborhood is on guard after a man attacked a woman coming home from work.

It happened just after 1:00 a.m. Monday, April 24 on Parrish road in west Augusta, right down the street from Westside High School.

Oneila Valesquez says she was fighting for her life and the life of her seven-year-old daughter.

A man attacked her when she was returning home from work.

"He was like, 'If you don't shut up, I'm going to shoot you'."

Oneila was returning home from work. She was trying to get her sleeping seven year old out of the back seat of the car.

"I'm bracing myself against the door and he's pushing me trying to get me in the back seat of the car."

Oneila said her attacker came from behind her apartment building. She believes he was waiting for her to get home late from work, and when she got out of her car, that's when he jumped her.

"I guess with the gun in my face I gave way because I was in such shock. I ended up in the back seat of my car laying across my daughter."

Oneila says she believes the attacker was about to rape her, because he passed up her keys and her wallet.

But whatever the attempt, it was foiled by neighbor Kenneth Barnes, who walked up on the attack after hearing screams.

"I wasn't sure what was going on so I stood and watched for a moment, and that's when the attacker got up and ran off," Barnes says.

"If my neighbor would not be there God knows what would have happened," says Oneila.

Oneila says that since the attack, she's purchased pepper spray and signed up for a gun training course.

Her feelings of security are gone.

"I'm not staying another night here," Oneila says. She had no second thoughts as she packed her belongings to move out the very next day. "See what else I can get," she says.
