Volunteers help rebuild historic Houghton School

Volunteers are breathing new life into a piece of downtown Augusta's history.

About 150 people from Aurora Christian Schools in Illinois are helping Augusta's Heritage Christian Academy renovate the building so they can move in to the first floor.

The volunteers are working on painting, plumbing, refurbishing floors and even demolishing some interior walls.

"Miracles are happening and we witness every time we come," says Dan Cassidy, director of construction. "Whatever we are doing it seems to be extremely multiplied at the end. We're amazed at what has been accomplished."

The Houghton School was built in 1853, but was destroyed and then rebuilt after Augusta's Great Fire.

The building has been vacant for about 5 years.
