One local pastor uses writing to address the issues of marriage and divorce.

Dr. Gregory Fuller, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Augusta, is hoping his new book "Why Marry?" will help when choosing a mate.

News 12's Domonique Benn sat down with the pastor, who spoke about why, when, and to whom to commit.

Djenane Demetrius is getting married in a few weeks. At Macedonia Baptist Church, she will vow to be with her husband through good times and bad.

"The biggest thing is learning how to deal with conflict and being open to communication," Demetrius says.

Nearly half of all couples break the promise to stay together, ending their marriage with divorce.

Demetrius' pastor Dr. Gregory Fuller wrote his book "Why Marry?" to help couples sort it all out before they say, "I do".

"A lot of persons marry because everybody else is getting married. 'I want to be married', 'I'm dealing with the fact that I'm getting older', 'I'm not sure if this is the right person but he or she is better than not have anybody at all'," Dr. Fuller says.

In addition to marriage counseling with her pastor, Demetrius read the book, taking notes along the way.

"You are the cake and your husband is the ice cream. You are perfectly fine by yourself, but you're better when it's together," Demetrius says.

Dr. Fuller's book is a blueprint to choosing a mate and having a successful marriage.

He talks about the meaning of marriage all the way to knowing who to marry.

Dr. Fuller says many times couples come to the altar to get married and even then there is doubt.

"If you don't have peace with it, if there is something nagging, gnawing at you saying something just ain't right, trust me: something is not right," Dr. Fuller says.

"It's okay to postpone, it's okay to ask questions, but get help," says Demetrius.

For relationships that seem blurred, understanding why may help clear things up.

The book is for a person of any faith. It is available at Family Christian Bookstore in the Augusta Exchange shopping center.

Dr. Fuller is planning a discussion and book signing at Books-A-Million on April 29th at 5pm.
