If you've driven down Laney Walker Boulevard lately, you may have noticed the progress on the new Laney High School stadium and athletic complex.

Contractors are on schedule and hope to be finished by the fall.

Superintendent Dr. Charles Larke explains some changes to the plans that will only mean more football fans.

Betty and Willie Jones have seen the transformation of their neighborhood in the past five months.

"Most of the houses had gone down, the area had gone down, and when you have new Laney Walker areas that have been built up, you've got to make this side look good to build up," says Betty.

And building up is what's happening.

Contractors are piecing together what will be Laney High School's new stadium and athletic complex.

Originally plans called for a 6,000-seat stadium at $8.5 million, but city commissioners contributed $2.5 million and the Augusta Neighborhood Improvement Corporation contributed $1 million to the project.

Now instead of 6,000 seats, "We now will have 9,000 seats and added restroom facilities for that capacity," says Richmond County School Superintendent Dr. Charles Larke.

The entire complex calls for football, soccer, baseball, and softball fields, press boxes, and even a walking track accessible to the public.

Until now Laney was the only high school with a football program without a stadium.

"I've seen different areas they are going to have over in the stadium. That's going to be nice," Betty says.

"Why is it important that Laney finally gets their own stadium? I think that every high school needs to have their own stadium. What is home field advantage if you don't have a home?" says Dr. Larke.

Something that means a lot when playing one of your biggest rivals.
