Churches and bars may now co-exist in downtown Augusta

Proposed changes to the alcohol ordinance in downtown Augusta were up for a second reading at Tuesday's commission meeting.

One change alters the way distance is measured between bars and churches. The other change causes the distance requirement not to apply to any structure not originally built to be a church.

The Downtown Advisory Panel proposed the changes in an effort to fill vacant spots in the downtown area.

They passed, and as a result, some places of worship will be next to bars in the future.
