Investigators say a man with a history of drunk driving killed a pedestrian and then ran.

Christopher Vogt is in the Richmond County jail tonight under charges of vehicle homicide in the first degree, DUI and hit and run.

Wednesday night's hit and run happened on Greene Street.

Investigators say 45-year-old William Eichner was walking when he was hit and killed.

They say the man who did it was driving drunk...and as News 12 uncovered, this isn't the first time.

Take one look at the car involved in the hit and run death, and it's easy to see where a body knocked the windshield Wednesday night.

The car is what gave away the suspect.

Investigators say Christopher Vogt of North Augusta was driving drunk on Greene Street when he hit Eichner.

Accident marks on the street show the body flew about 100 feet from where it was hit.

But you won't find skid marks there...a sign that Vogt didn't hit the brakes.

Major Richard Weaver says after the accident, Vogt kept driving.

But witnesses saw everything.

“Witnesses on the second described a white new vehicle that had left the scene,” says Maj. Weaver.

About half an hour later, deputies found the car about a mile away.

They say Vogt saw them, and turned himself in.

Investigators say Vogt told them he knew he hit something, but didn't know it was a person.

They say Vogt smelled strongly of alcohol.

This wouldn't be the first time Vogt has driven drunk.

Maj. Weaver says he was convicted of DUI in 1998.

“You would think people would learn,” he says. “But it happens and we just have to deal with it.”

Eichner had a Michigan driver's license on him.

Investigators believe he might be homeless.

Richmond County alone responds to 70 or 80 hit-and-run cases each month, or 2 to 3 a day.

That includes hitting pedestrians, other vehicles, and even structures.

The punishment for the first offense is 1 to 5 years behind bars and a fine of $300 to $1000.
