Termite-infested mulch in the CSRA? No, says official

Could mulch containing termites from hurricane-ravaged Louisiana reach Georgia and South Carolina?

News 12 received an e-mail that said cheap mulch could be contaminated with termites and sold in Augusta. But when we asked an official if it was true, the answer was no.

"First of all, they are contracting down there to chip up and grind the wood debris up, but they're actually taking it to approved landfills,” says Sid Mullis of the Augusta-Richmond County Tree Commission. “So the material is actually being quarantined. So none of it is being shipped out."

Mullis says the termites would not be the biggest danger anyway.

He says contaminates from the flooding would be a bigger concern, and that no contaminated materials have been reported here in the CSRA.
