Richmond County deputy sent to hospital after catching burglary suspect in the act; suspect still at large

It happened close to 8 o'clock Tuesday evening on Third Street in downtown Augusta.

Around 7:53pm, officers got a call from a resident of Broadway Apartments who complained they heard strange noises in their apartment.

When Deputy Eric Harrison responded, he caught the burglar red handed when the suspect fled on foot.

The chase ended at the corner of Broad and Third Street behind the apartment complex, when the officer and the suspect got into a struggle.

That's when the officer’s gun was fired once and the suspect made away with the deputy's gun.

Police don't have a very good description of the suspect right now; they do know they're on the lookout for a large black male who may have a cut on one of his hands.

The deputy was treated for minor cuts and bruises.

Officers say the gun was fired.

“The firearm was discharged,” says Richmond County investigator Jerry Howell. “We don't know who pulled the trigger. The firearm was recovered less than 150 feet from the scene.”

Deputy Harrison was treated for minor cuts and bruises at the hospital last night.

Police don't have a very good description of the suspect right now; they do know they're on the lookout for a large black male who may have a cut on one of his hands.
