Scary moments for an Augusta neighborhood when a house caught fire with four children inside. It happened Wednesday morning at 3212 Collier Road, that’s off Lumpkin Road. Three of the children were able to get out of the house, but a four-year-old was trapped inside.
“The house is gone,” said Mamie Hill, neighbor.
The call came in at 11:09 Wednesday morning. This house at 3212 Collier Road was engulfed in flames. Neighbor Mamie Hill heard screaming from inside.
“I saw smoke and the fire at the same time so I called the fire department and the lady told me the department was on its way,” Hill said.
“While we were enroute we received additional information from the dispatchers that there was possibly children trapped or locked inside the residence,” said Captain Alan Kneece, Augusta Fire Department.
Four children were inside sleeping, ages 15, 10, 5 and 4. The fifteen-year-old who was babysitting woke up and was able to get the ten and five year olds out safely. The four year old was trapped inside.
“I said the fire is so hot in there, but that baby got to be got out,” Hill said.
Felice Rucker lives up the street and received the frantic call from her 15-year-old nephew.
“The only thing he could tell me was the house was on fire and my four-year-old nephew was caught in the house,” Rucker said.
A driver passing by noticed the fire. No one knows who this stranger is, only that he is credited with saving a four-year-old’s life.
“A person driving down the road they was able to stop, they spotted the four-year-old standing at the window, busted the window and pulled him out,” Kneece said.
“I said there is a window back there you can go through that window he said well I’m going in, he went in and got the little boy,” Hill said.
“To whoever did it thank you God Bless you all cause it would have turned out for the worse,” Rucker said.
The fire department is investigating the cause. The four children were not injured and were taken to MCG only for evaluation. The fire department would like to speak to the man who pulled the four year old out of the burning house.
