WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW) -- Waynesboro City Council member Brenda Lewis paid the Clerk of Court $1,500 by the close of business Tuesday to avoid jail time after missing a prior set deadline.
The Clerk of Court confirms she must pay the balance of $3,353 no later than the close of business on Nov. 15. If she doesn’t, an arrest warrant will be issued.
Lewis pleaded not guilty in February to fraud charges.
Burke County Chief Magistrate Sterling Wimberly says 49-year-old Lewis received 11 weekly unemployment checks when she was still employed in 2009.
A repayment plan was set up, but Lewis did not keep up her part of the agreement. The amount of money she was paid (plus interest and a fine) totals $4,295. This is a violation of the Georgia Employment Security Law.
