RUTH BROWN IS DRIVING ALL THE WAY FROM PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA TO SEE HER FAMILY FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
"IT USUALLY TAKES 10 HOURS, WE STOPPED LAST NIGHT IN FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA AND LEFT THIS MORNING."

HOPING TO BEAT SOME OF THE 13 MILLION TRAVELERS IN THE SOUTHEAST THAT PLAN ON GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL THIS WEEKEND AND SHE SAYS--SO FAR, SO GOOD.

"TRAFFIC HASN'T BEEN BAD AT ALL REALLY, REALLY GOOD...MOVING SWIFTLY AND EVERYTHING HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS."

---AND OFFICERS HOPE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.
THAT'S WHY GEORGIA STATE TROOPERS ALONG WITH LOCAL POLICE PLAN ON HITTING THE ROADWAYS THIS WEEKEND TO BEGIN "OPERATION ZERO TOLERANCE"

IT'S A CONTROLLED EFFORT TO TRY TO KEEP DUI'S OFF ROADS, THEY'LL SET UP SOBRIETY CHECK POINTS.
MEANING, YOU WON'T GET VERY FAR BEFORE YOU'LL SEE ONE OF THESE.
RICHMOND COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES ALONE PLAN ON DOUBLING THEIR MANPOWER IN ORDER TO PREVENT SOME OF THE 1700 TRAFFIC WRECKS THEY'RE PREDICTING OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

"HOPEFULLY OUR PRESENCE WILL CUT IT DOWN SOME BUT IF YOU'RE OUT DRINKING TAKE SOMEONE YOU CAN DEPEND ON TO BE A DESIGNATED DRIVER SO YOU CAN GET HOME SAFELY."

AND EVEN THOUGH FOR BONITA WEAVER THAT MEANS THERE WON'T BE ANY SPEEDING SHE SAYS IT MAKES HER FEEL SAFE ON THE ROADWAYS.

"I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE PATROLS OUT THEIR JOB ISS TO INCREASE PUBLIC SAFETY, NO ONE WANTS A TICKET BUT I'D RATHER THAT THAN SOMEONE GET SERIOUSLY HURT."
