AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Neighbors at the River Glen Apartments are fed up with their living conditions. Some complain about no AC, mold and leaking roofs, among others. More than 50 tenants are asking the mayor and commissioners to step in.

Code Enforcement is now investigating and finding problems. Petitions were dropped off to commissioners because tenants are fed up.

"We don't have to be treated like we're bad people. It doesn't matter that we living in housing projects. Don't treat us like we're low grade," said River Glen resident Cheryl Bryant.

Bryant lives in the government subsidized apartments and has for years. She started the petitions.

"I have to flush my toilet like this. I have to turn my shower with a screwdriver," Bryant said.

Another tenant who's too afraid to go on camera showed us leaks in the sink and ceiling, as well as a broken toilet. One neighbor even told us the maintenance men spray paint the stove when the housing authority comes to do their yearly inspection.

"So the agency is still paying for people to live out here that are not going by the rules. It's the manager's job to manage these apartments," Bryant said.

We wanted to ask the property manager about all this, but she ran inside as soon as she spotted us. The property manager never came out.

"The folks call us," said Code Enforcement Manager Pamela Costabile.

Costabile sent one of her inspectors to the property.

"We found one apartment that doesn't have a smoke detector. The flooring is in disrepair. Windows broken and the ducts that needs attention," she said.

Costabile says the city inspected five apartments and took pictures of violations including mold.

"Any mold can be a problem if you have allergies or asthma. If you breathe it enough and you're closed inside, it can be a problem for anyone. It has to be addressed," Costabile said.

Something Bryant wants to happen sooner rather than later.
