New National Hills Tower?

Neighbors living in National Hills are fighting to keep a towering condominium within its limits. Developers want to build a 14 story building right where National Hills Shopping Center now sits right across from Augusta National. But the neighborhood association says the developers should keep the height of the building within ordinance.

Along Washington Road, National Hills Shopping Center advertises that there is retail space available. Pretty soon though, the space will be transformed into luxury condominiums.

“They are proposing to redo the shopping center according to this,” Bob Austin, Zoning Administrator said.

The National Hills Neighborhood Association says the towering complex would cause drainage problems and create more traffic headaches along an already busy road.

“Of course this tall building will tower over the residence a little bit so that's why they are opposed to any building of what is allowed, which is 105 feet,” Austin said.

The zoning ordinance allows for condos to be built up to 6 stories high, but developers want to add more stories, an issue that has them going to the Zoning Board Of Appeals.

Developers want to go beyond the ordinance. Their plans call for a 14 story building, 8 stories higher than what's approved in the ordinance.

“The Board can either approve it or deny it,” Austin said.

Rebbeca Doughty lives behind the current shopping center. Her Neighborhood Association is petitioning the height of the condo. They want her to sign a petition, but she wants to know more.

“I would like to know why people don't want that,” Doughty said.

Neighbor Frances Jones received a similar call from the Association.

“There would be a petition coming around the neighborhood for people to sign who objected to it,” Jones said.

The Neighborhood Association plans to meet with homeowners over the weekend and explain why the taller condo may have an adverse affect on the neighorhood; drainage and traffic being number one.

Developers plan to meet with the Zoning Board Of Appeals sometime in January to appeal for a taller building.
